Everything Wrong With "Witchcraft"

Witchcraft! Satan magic! Devil worship! I swear, time heals all wounds, but it can't seem to heal the plague that is ignorance. Hating on something just, because it's different or misunderstood needs to stop. So I believe that knowledge is the best weapon against ignorance and hate. So for any fellow spiritual beings that have faced or continue to face this plague, please know that you are not alone.

What is witchcraft?

Wikipedia defines witchcraft as the practice of magical skills, spells, and abilities. Witchcraft is a broad term that varies culturally and societally, and thus can be difficult to define with precision.

Of course we also see the terms "witchcraft" and "sorcery" in the Bible...and they definitely don't say good things about the craft. So bad, in fact, that the Bible's description of witchcraft was used to justify the killing and torturing of hundreds of people plus the discrimination of women and minorities for centuries.

It Demonizes Women

You guys ever read the book of Enoch? If you have, great you already know what I'm about to say. However, if you haven't then please give it a read when you can.

The Book of Enoch is a historical text written by Enoch (Noah's great grandfather) and it describes the origins of giants, demons, the fallen angels, the flood, and many other things.

painting of the witches of Enoch from Wikipedia

So in the Book of Enoch, he talks about the Watchers, the Sons of Heaven, who saw the beautiful daughters of men and took them as wives. They taught the women sorcery, charms, roots, and plants. Those angels were not devils or demons, The Watchers were sons of heaven sent down to literally watch over man. So tell me why that's bad? Especially when many men in the Bible were also given secrets from Heaven and knew things that others didn't. They weren't called witches or sorcerers though, they were called prophets. Also the men who dabbled with roots and plants and charms...were called alchemists and scientists.

Depiction of Adam and Eve in the Garden

Of course, let's not forget to mention the classic Genesis Story where everything is Eve's fault for making a decision without her Husband.

So much demonizing that led to the belief that any free-thinking woman is consulting with the Devil like Eve or knew too much and would eventually lead the world into chaos and darkness like the wives of the Watchers.

It Demonizes Different Cultures and Religions.

Traditional voodoo ritual

I remember being in church as a little girl and listening to my pastor preach his sermon about Jesus being the way, the truth, and the light. He preached that the path to salvation is through Jesus only. I remember thinking to myself, well what about everybody else who didn't know Jesus or weren't anywhere near him. What about the millions of people who weren't even in that country. Did they just all go to hell until the conquistadors came over and forced them to convert, or the Europeans came and stole people and forced them to convert to Christianity.

Ancient Egyptian priestess

The narrative that people, including myself, have been taught is that other cultures practiced paganism, worshipped demons, or practiced witchcraft and sorcery. So basically everyone else is bad and did bad things and God told them to come and fix them. However, the truth is that African religions and cultures were very peaceful and practiced tolerance and free-thinking. Even the most well-known African Civilization, Ancient Egypt, worshipped many gods and had their own religious practices that promoted taking care of the Earth and respecting others and yourself. They also held women in very high regard as they were seen as gateways to the spiritual world and connections to the mother goddess.

Native Woman shaman

The original people of the Americas and other Native civilizations around the world also had beautiful and rich cultural practices. They also held women in high regard. They were very free-thinking and respected others. Contrary to the narrative that the Native People were all savages, they were actually peace-loving and diplomatic. They also held their women in very high regard because of their connection to the spiritual realm.

I would LOVE to be called a priestess or a shaman.

My point is...

If you're a person that has been pulled to the call of the spiritual realm and are afraid of being judged by Christians or anyone, please know that you are not alone and there are many on your side. Including me. I believe that if you're not trying to hurt yourself or others, that it doesn't matter what you believe or practice. And when the haters come to throw stones at you, kindly remind them that you don't give a damn.

Find a good teacher, a beginner's guide or something to help you navigate the spiritual realm in a safe way.

Be careful and don't ever forget to love and protect yourself!
