Role playing is the type of thing everyone’s heard of but may or may not have done before. And those who are curious enough about it to consider giving it a try for themselves aren’t sure how to get started. What is role playing really all about, anyway?

Is it just about dressing up and pretending to be somebody else in the bedroom? Is role playing still a good fit for you if you’re shy? How can you make sure you and your partner both get everything you’re hoping for out of the experience? Let’s take a look at the answers to those questions and more.

What do people mean when they say they “role play”?

Role playing is pretty much exactly what it sounds like it is – embracing a role to add novelty, nuance, and excitement to a given sexual experience. Beyond that, though, anything goes, and the way a role playing session might play out is entirely up to the two people involved.

Some people do like to dress up in costumes and pretend to be completely different people. Others like to be themselves but lose themselves in a scenario that lets them try out being a nurse, a maid, or any number of other things within a sexual context.

Some couples engage in role playing strictly within the confines of their own homes, while others really dig the rush, they get playing their roles out in public around other people. They can pretend to be strangers, relive specific scenarios, and much more. How you go about it is entirely up to you, and there’s no right or wrong approach.

What is the appeal of role playing?

Just as there are endless ways to approach playing a role, there are many different reasons a particular person or couple might be into roleplay. Here are just a few to consider.

  • It can be a real turn-on to pretend to be someone else.
  • It’s a fun, safe way to explore various fantasy scenarios.
  • It’s a great way to make sex with someone familiar feel exciting, unpredictable, and new.
  • It’s an easy way to spice things up in the bedroom and keep things from getting stale.

And there’s no one type of person who’s right for role playing. Yes, many fearless, extroverted types enjoy it. But many shy people find playing a role makes it easier to come out of their shell a little and take a walk on the wild side occasionally.

How can a beginner get the most out of roleplay?

Even the most experienced role players had to start somewhere, so don’t feel self-conscious about still needing to learn the ropes. Here are some tips to help you get into character, find your personal style as a role player, and have the time of your life.

  1. Keep in mind that it’s still your partner: Whether you’re shy or just a little inexperienced, it’s only natural for new role players to fear being judged. That’s where it can help to keep in mind that no matter how real a scenario feels, it’s still your partner – the same person you love, trust, and feel sexually comfortable with under every other circumstance.
  2. Lean into your own hotness: Think of role playing as a sexier, naughtier version of Halloween. It’s a chance to let another side of you come out to play, and it can be a lot of fun embracing that hot, sexy part of your personality. You’re red hot, and your partner is undoubtedly eager to see that hotness on display in a new way.
  3. Definitely include costumes and gear: Although dressing up isn’t absolutely required when you’re roleplaying, it really is half the fun of it. It’s also the perfect excuse to buy some sexy costumes or sumptuous lingerie of a variety you might not usually buy. So go shopping, go all out, and have a blast leaning into your role of choice.
  4. Don’t overdo the alcohol: While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a cocktail or two to get in the mood and relax a little more easily into your role, you don’t want to overdo things. Too much alcohol can lead to performance issues or possibly even doing something you’ll regret later. There’s even the chance you might not remember all the highlights, which defeats the purpose.
  5. Have a safe word: Anytime you’re trying something new in the bedroom with a partner, it’s a good idea to have a safe word that lets either of you shut things down immediately if you’re uncomfortable for any reason. So have one, just in case.

Beyond the above pointers, the only limits to how to approach roleplay are those set by your imagination. So have fun, be creative, and let your creativity run wild! You’re sure to be glad you did.
