In the Land of Giants

I was working as a freelance writer on a site called Upwork, trying to pay a few bills and work my way through a master's degree in Psychology. Over time, I received a variety of different commissions ranging from making a bio for a blog writer to developing articles and/or proofreading text, etc. But the one that caught me off guard the most was a commission to ghost-write two short stories for a grand each.

But they weren't your typical short stories. No, these were macrophile stories. I turned down the opportunity as I had no desire to write sexually charged fiction, but I did decide that it was time to increase my understanding of fetishes and their communities. Here are my discoveries.

What is a macrophile or macrophilia? Well, if you spend any time studying psychology, you are going to be faced with the topic of sexual attraction. Among the dozens of subcategories and emphasis, you will find the extra taboo and challenging topic of fetishes. And Macrophilia is one of those more unique and, allegedly, fastest growing subcategory of fetish in America.

At it's simplest form, macrophilia is the fetish/sexual attraction towards a giant of some form. And a macrophile is an individual who experiences the manifestation of macrophilia in their fantasies and desires.

There are four primary types of storylines with dozens of variations of those four. Basically, it is dependent on the primary characters and their personalities or their character.

There is the larger character and the smaller character. What's interesting here is that most macrophiles don't seem to care about gender so much as the emotion of the situation, though there is usually a preference.

The biggest key element if the exchange of power and control. One gains control and/or another loses control. For example, Two friends are in the same room. Equals. By some means, whether mystical or pseudoscientific, one friend ends up larger than the other. Friend A might grow larger or friend B might shrink. Or both!

With this change in size also comes a change of control because one becomes significantly more powerful than the other and can then enforce his or her will upon the opposite party. That's where we then split into four prime scenarios.

*It is important to note here that half of these four scenarios could also be referred to as microphilia, but the premise is the same and the community generally lumps them all together into macrophilia.*

The main characters are the key to the scenario type. Some prefer to be the "tiny" and others prefer to be the giant. furthermore, the story is shaped by the attitude and character of the giant, whether kind or malicious.

The fantasy will always force the giant into one of these roles. But the giant might be unaware of the tiny human and thus will be unintentionally malicious, but malicious nonetheless.

Regardless of the giant being kind or malicious, we still feel the thick weight of the loss of control by the smaller party, and this can play out as a comfort or as a terror for that character. One would think that fantasizing a story of being shrunken and placed at the mercy of a malicious giant wouldn't be arousing, but people used to say the same about chairs and cars and whips. In fact, macrophilia appears to have a lot of similar elements to that of S&M communities.

Personally, I have known several macrophiles who have lived with this interesting fetish. They have expressed the many different ways that these desires have manifested in their private fantasies but also how the experience has impacted the way they feel about themselves.

In college, I stumbled into the greater community of people who had the same experiences and that there were creatives that were making videos and photos that depicted the size differences in more realistic ways

As you might imagine, most keep quiet about such thoughts and fantasies. This is probably why science has yet to discover the root of these desires. Some have speculated that an overbearing mother, molestation as a child, or various abuses could cause these fantasies to develop, much in the same way that someone who was sexually assaulted might have rape fantasies. They might abhor the feeling and thoughts of such an action, but the conditioned arousal is still there and overrides the mind.

The increase in the community might possibly be related to the advances in technology and photo editing that allow the mind to see concepts otherwise inconceivable. Overall the presence of such desires appears to be harmless. Though the real risk lies in cultural shame rooted in ignorance on such matters.

As of the time of my research, the present research is minuscule at best. This, like many elements of the human sexual spectrum needs further research, but it would take significant time and energy to survey a sample of people large enough to be substantial. Even then, the effects of psychopathology are so extensive that coming to a firm conclusion on the matter might be next to impossible.
