There is nothing more beautiful than driving through the Colorado Rocky Mountains during the winter. As the drive starts to get closer to the mountains, you look up from seeing dry green land to seeing the tips of wet white mountains. It is like looking into another world. Literally you see the perfect painting with a variation of colors that start at the bottom with the green grounds, up to the brown and red trees, to the white at the top of the mountains, and then you reach this gorgeous blue sky encased by fluffy white clouds with beams of orange and yellow rays from the sun breaking through from the heavens. It is absolutely breathtaking.

Sarah Jones loved coming up to the Rocky Mountain Family Resort in Crested Butte Colorado every winter for the last eight years with her best friend Maggie Brown. Her and Maggie had been roommates their freshman year at Harvard. Through the four years they had become best friends, then over the next four year they grew to become more like sisters. When Maggie’s parents passed away from a car accident six months ago, she inherited the resort. She had asked Sarah if she would consider moving here to help her run it since she loved it as much as she did. Sarah told her she needed some time to think about it. It took about two months before Sarah had made up her mind that she was ready to leave the big city life behind her and move from Los Angeles. Sure she would miss the ocean breeze and salt air that came off of the Pacific Ocean, but she would not miss the hustle and bustle of the city.

As she pulled into the driveway of the resort, she knew immediately that she had made the right decision. She got out and took a deep breath of fresh air and headed inside to find Maggie. Since they had already decided that they would go back to their college days and she would move in with Maggie at her parents house, which sat on the back right corner of the property, she left all of her bags in the car. She walked straight to the back offices and into Maggies, who was on the phone. Maggie motioned for her to sit down.

Maggie hung up the phone a few minutes later, let out a deep breath, then jumped up, ran around the desk and squealed, “I am so glad you are here!”

Sarah jumped up as well and hugged her back, “Me too! I honestly can’t wait to start this new adventure!”

They went around the rest of the day going through the day to day functions of the resort. At every stop that day, they asked the workers if they had any complaints or compliments from the guests and they took notes on everything said.

They started with the front desk/lounge area and worked their way around inside the main building which consisted of the dining area, kitchen, game room, spa, and gift shop. Then they went outside to the left of the main building to the man made ice skating rink, like the bobsledding track, which was open all year. From there they walked to the right of the main building where there were two restaurants to speak with those managers. One was an Italian restaurant and the other was an American steakhouse. When they left there, they went a little further left to the ski lift office, did a walk through on the bunny slopes, then grabbed a pair of skis, got on the lift to ski down the big slopes. The only part of the grounds they did not go to today was the cabana and building that was built for parties and weddings. The ice skating rink sat in front of them on the other side of the bobsled track. They decided they would tackle that the next day, it was already getting late. They went and had dinner, moved Sarah’s stuff inside, before turning in for the night.

Over the course of the next five weeks, they worked together to increase marketing and advertising, which was Sarah’s specialty. They made repairs to things that they found during their tour that needed to be fixed or that they decided that they wanted to just upgrade. Sarah had started to book out the venue for weddings for the upcoming spring season through the following winter.

They hired Zumba and Yoga instructors that would host classes in the venue building to keep it in use between events and add a little extra to the appeal of the resort. They were approached by a former Olympic skier who just moved to the area looking for a place that he could give ski lessons at. Even though they didn’t need another instructor, they hired him anyway, just because they knew it would be a good business decision to bring in more guests which brings in more revenue.

Colin Bryant was eye-catching for sure, but to Sarah she couldn’t get past his ego. Her skin crawled every time she was near him. Women threw themselves at him all the time and he would soak it up. He would flirt with all of them, taking photos with them, laughing and making small talk. One thing was for sure, he did bring a lot of business their way once she put his name on the marketing materials for people to come take lessons from him. Maggie would laugh at her every time she saw Sarah’s face when Colin came around.

“You know, I don’t think those are feelings of dislike or disgust! I think you really like him and you just don’t want anyone to know because you think he is such a snob! But really Sarah, you should have a real conversation with him. He is really not what you see on the outside. He puts on a good show for the public. But he is really a sweet, compassionate guy,” Maggie said to her one day.

“Don’t start Mags,” Sarah said, rolling her eyes. “I don’t have any feelings for him. At least no romantic feelings.”

All of those feelings of disgust changed the day she decided to take a walk on the pond near the house. She never thought she would be so happy to see him until her life had depended on him. It was still winter and she thought the pond was still frozen enough to walk on. To her surprise she got about twenty-five feet from the edge when she heard cracking under her feet.

Oh my gosh. Please don’t let that be the ice I hear. I just wanted to walk out here away from everyone for a few minutes of peace and quiet to clear my mind. What am I going to do?

“Help, Help,” Sarah yells. No one is going to hear me. Maybe I can just turn. Around and go back the way I came. It didn’t crack when I came out here. I should be fine, right?

She turned around, took two steps, and under her right foot she felt the ice crack. She stopped dead in her tracks. What in the hell am I going to do?

She must have screamed for at least fifteen minutes, but I felt like hours before she heard a male voice.

“Sarah, is that you? Keep yelling. I am on my way,” the male voice yelled.

“Yes, it’s me. Please hurry. The ice is cracking. I don’t know how much loner it is going to hold,” Sarah yelled back.

When she saw Colin she felt so relieved. Now she just needs him to save her. He told her to stay very still. He laid down on his stomach and slid out to her. Once he got to her, he told her to very gently lay down and no matter what happened, to know that he was not going to let her go? By the time she heard the last part, she was on her knees and the ice broke. She was through the ice from the waist down but he held the head of both of her arms and was already pulling her out and across the ice in what seemed like a few seconds.

Once they got to the edge He stood up and grabbed her in his arms and carried her to the house where she gave him the key out of her pocket, and he put her on the couch, and lit a fire.

“You can go take a shower. You need to get out of those wet clothes before you catch pneumonia,” Colin said.

“Colin, I don’t know how to thank you enough for literally saving my life,” Sarah said as she stood up from the couch.

“You don’t have to thank me. We can talk later. Please go get out of those clothes,” Colin said.

“Okay,” Sarah said.

She expected him to be gone when she came back into the living room to sit in front of the fire, but he wasn’t. He was sitting on the couch with two cups of hot chocolate on the coffee table. He got up when he saw her walk in the room, grabbed the Afghan from the back of the couch and walked over to her. She stopped and he put it around her shoulders.

“You didn’t have to stay. I’m fine,” Sarah said. “Thank you.” As he put the Afghan around her.

“You scared me to death. If anything would have happened to you. I hadn’t even gotten to tell you yet,” Colin said.

“You were scared? Tell me what? Colin, what are you talking about?” Sarah asked.

“Sarah, do you really not have any idea about my feelings for you? I have tried to talk to you. I have tried to let on, but you seem to always push me away. I never get a chance to even get close to you,” Colin replied.

“Me? You have feelings for me? You have gorgeous women falling at your feet all the time. You seem to love it to me,” Sarah said with sort of an attitude.

“Is that why you blow me off with an attitude? You think I am some egotistical male? I am nice because I have just learned to be that way in the eye of the public. And those women, have nothing on you. In five weeks you have taken my breath away and I have fallen in love you,” he said as he leaned down and kissed her deeply.

When he leaned up, she looked in his eyes and for the first time, sh really saw him and she knew that he was telling the truth. She let her guard down and confused her true feelings as well, “I have fallen in love you too Colin.” And he picked her up at that moment (she giggles) and carried her to the couch. He lays her her down and lays on top of her and they start kissing each other with all the passion they had been holding inside for weeks.
