They were at a festival. Gals hanging around the vendors and taking in the sights. She noticed a gorgeous guy but her friend beat her to it and smacked his ass. He thought she did it and started to talk. He asked if they would like to go out for some pizza. The future couple totally attracted. So, they hopped into a car and drove.

Once they got to the pizza shop and ate, he grabbed some napkins and wrote his telephone number on a napkin. Like a marriage certificate.

He was good-looking and a football player. She was pretty and on the danceline. They went to different high schools. Again, they were totally attracted to each other.

They began dating right away.

And she trusted him.

Once talk of university began, she wanted to study Political Science at a prestigious private university and then go to law school. He was supposed to go to a university in the same city and then go to medical school. But, he at the last moment chose a university two (2) states away. We were fine though. I was very disappointed, but knew our future was worth it.

And she trusted him.

He once told her that a marriage certificate was just a piece of paper. But, she loved him so much. What about that napkin?

And she trusted him.

He talked on the telephone about going to “mixers” with all of the freshmen to get to meet each other. Now, was he telling the truth? What were those “mixers” really all about?

He then talked about how there were girls on the “meat market” there. What is exactly the “meat market”.

One weekend, she visited him at the university and saw a girl’s drivers license in his dorm room. He did not know what to say. But she gave him the benefit of the doubt. Silly girl, he’d never cheat.

And she trusted him.

She worked two (2) jobs and carried a full load at university. He called her at work one day and said she was too far away. So, she left her dream university and transferred to a hell hole college near him.

One summer arrived and he said he was going to the beach for a summer job.

And she trusted him.

She flew down for a week. A friend had given her the money for the plane tickets. The girl was poor. After the week was over, she asked him to wait until the plane took off to leave the airport. She sat in her airplane seat, looked out the window and saw his vehicle drive away fast! He did not wait! Why didn’t he wait? Why did he leave so fast?

And she trusted him.

The summer was over. She thought she’d clean his vehicle of all the sand from the beach before university was to begin again. She found pages of a coloring book, scrunchies for the hair, nightclub business cards, etc. She did not know what to think.

She confronted him. She was angry. She had trusted enough.

She asked him how they “did it”. He said “spoon-style”. He said that she said his eyes were mysterious.

And she didn’t trust him. The ultimate betrayal. She began to wonder if all of those other signs of betrayal were staring right at her face?

She broke up with him. To this day, she has not been able to share her heart with another man. Living life as an old maid.

Was a marriage certificate “just” a piece of paper?

Like a marriage certificate sent to hell.
