It should have been an ordinary day. They were not supposed to come for weeks. I heard the cries and froze.
“The fairies, the fairies are coming!”
The screams.
We were not ready. They came too soon. Our offering was being gathered. We were supposed to have weeks.
The shrieking came closer, my body thawed, and I ran, leaving all in my home to their fate. I tried to focus on my heartbeat to drown out the gnashing, flapping, and crying.
I will be running the rest of my life.
