An Angel in Disguise

I saw the Vocal challenge for the 'Return of the Night Owl' and fancied giving it ago! I don't feel that I use this site enough to subscribe to vocal+ but still! I didn't want my story to go to waste! Enjoy ~

Head down, beady eyes focused, Tyto took in a deep breath, enjoying the cold night air rushing through his lungs. Filling him with relief and binding him to reality for a brief moment. This was exactly what he lived for - A rush in the dark, and tonight he knew exactly what he needed to do.

Focused and locked onto his target, he swooped low, tilting his body side to side with ease as he danced in the wind’s currents. His body was silent, yet heartbeat painfully loud in his ears. What he was about to do was risky, but it had to be done. With another deep breath, Tyto bulged his eyes, honing in on his prey and dived. Landing perfectly level upon the cold tarmac, right in front of a pair of fast approaching headlights. The deep caverns of his eyes filled with the approaching white, as he bobbed his head from side to side, counting down the seconds in his mind, calculating his attack.

Three, two, one. Tyto launched himself upright with his own flash of white, wings extending outwards as his body almost tripled in size. He didn’t even hesitate as he launched his pointed toes through the windscreen. Locking onto his target, he used one foot to grab the steering wheel, yanking it to the side and the other to silence his prey. The man’s body fell limp at his touch, talons already lodged into his chest. The car hit the grassy bank with a thud, revving violently as it charged through into the field behind, churning up a mixture of mud and stones in its wake. Tyto released the being from his grip, and reached for the keys, violently pulling them from their home and hurling them through the open window and into the muddy field. Rendering the blue automobile useless.

Panting heavily, he squeezed himself back through the shattered windscreen. Ignoring the crimson liquid dripping from his wings and chest. That was something he’d turn his attention to once he’d accomplished his task. Tucking his tainted white wings behind him, he clumsily hopped from the car and marched towards the boot. Launching himself onto it with a loud thud, rocking the small car backwards. Before using one of his long talons to click open the lock, hopping to the safety of the car’s roof as it flipped open.

A muffled gasp and crippling scream ripplied in the air around him, the sound violently vibrating his ear drums and almost deafening him in the process. Tyto jerked away from the noise, there were times when he adored his enhanced senses, but this was certainly not one of them. The young girl who had been trapped inside of the boot gradually collected herself. Starting with her breathing, before beginning to mutter to herself. She was safe now, and Tyto was certain that the farmer who lived in the house at the top of the field would have heard her screams, and soon be down to investigate. All they both needed to do now was wait. As if silently instructed, the blonde swung her bound legs over the back of the boot, before hurling herself awkwardly upright, resting on the side of the car and staring blankly out into the dark field.

Tyto remained nearby on the roof of the car, his body slowly shrinking back into his animal form. It wasn’t long before he heard the click of the farmers door in the distance, and the sound of his three large dogs hurtling down the field towards them, that was his cue. Tyto took off into the air, his wings silently fluttering as he rose with the wind. Before swooping down and circling the girl several times. A beautifully quick flash of white in the air, catching her attention each time, letting her know that she wasn’t alone.

“What the ‘effin ‘ell happened ‘ere?!” The Farmer hollered, approaching the crashed car. Quickly slowing when he saw the young girl bound by thick rope sitting upright in the boot.

Tyto did one last low swoop before the farmer, resisting the sweet temptation to bop him on the head, for swearing in front of a minor. The hardy farmer swatted him away with his torch, before breaking into a quick smile.

“Dunno what ‘appened to ya’ lass, but I reckon that barn owl mighta’ saved ye’ life.”
