The American Dream

Love, laughs, and shrimp cocktail

Oh my god! Where do I even begin? Game day snacks?! To start, we’ve got Top The Tater dip. Never heard of it? It is native to Wisconsin and Minnesota and is better than any other sour cream and onion dip in the whole wide world!! It’s dense. It’s tasty. It’s MIND BLOWING! Ugh, and then there’s taco dip. Homemade, SPICY, with large Frito dippers, literally to die for…and the fried chicken? There’s this place in Chicago called Parson’s Chicken…they deep fry Amish chicken and it’s not hard to eat an ENTIRE chicken by yourself. It is sooooo comforting! Makes me feel like I’m home, like I’m a child – waiting for the halftime show and truly not understanding the whims of the sport being played on TV. Nostalgia at its finest.

Next on the list is shrimp. Can you even have a get together without some of our tailed friends? It’s always the first thing to go, and by far the most satiating. The taste of the cool water creatures in a irresistible cocktail sauce leaves you wanting more and more. Then there is the crème de le crème, brie in a round French loaf…you simply get your favorite brie…I like the French ones, and you heat it up in the over at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. You then place the cheese in the cut out round French loaf and cut the cheese open so it oozes and absorbs into the surrounding bread. What’s more American than heavy starch and carbs? You can’t go wrong.

Then there’s the sweets…the hot chocolate lava cakes, the cookies, and the miscellaneous pies brought by friends in an effort to fulfill their contributory duties. French silk, anyone? Extra whipped cream? Indulge. Indulge. Indulge!! The Superbowl is one of two days in an American year that warrants stuffing yourself to the brim with lots of goodies and no regrets. No shame – just lots of good cheer and laughs. Cookies? Ohhhhhhh yeah. If you’ve got a friend who’s a baker – you don’t know what you’re going to get. Chocolate chip? Snickerdoodle? Sugar cookies with lots of icing? It’s all good here. Honestly, if someone bakes you something and it tastes like heaven, you just know that person loves you. It’s like – wow, you really are my friend!!

Finally, there’s the alcohol. Beer, beets…Superbowl? Anyone ever try New Glarus beer? Spotted Cow? It is sooooo good, I’m not really sure how I could differentiate it from a lot of different beers because my pallet is not the refined. However, it’s refreshing, full of taste, and doesn’t leave anything hoppy lingering in your mouth after you’re done. Then you’ve got the wine for our cheese eaters, laughing as they sip their Pinot Noir and talk to each other about how idiotic men hitting their helmets against one another is. Not to mention the shot-takers, you know who I’m talking about right? The ones that will find any excuse to take another shot of tequila…oh wait, they scored?? SHOTTTT!!

Every year our friends and family compile a tasty smorgasbord of wonderful food and drinks…but the most important part of enjoying those things? The people you share them with. The laughs are the snacks that keep us coming back, year after year, watching a football game with teams that statistically are not our own. The Superbowl is another excuse to love one another and join with each other in a collaborative evening full of excitement. And after it’s done? After the scores have been made and the winner crowned with celebratory confetti – we return to our homes in anticipation of the next Superbowl filled with snacks and loved ones. Until next year my friends.
