Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul : A Cookbook----
A book review
This book is amazing. I have made at least 30 recipes out of this cookbook already and they are all delicious! The Southern-fried tofu, the country greens, and the roasted channa masala were my first tries--and they didn't disappoint.
The recipes are easy to follow, I took my time following them and they turned out beautifully. It was also easier to find the ingredients in the recipes than in most other vegan/ vegetarian cookbooks. Claiborne gives you all of your recipes in both US standard measurements as well as metrics which isn't very common when it comes to cooking books. That right there makes it worth owning!
It has nice photography of some of the recipes as well as an intro, about the author (Jenne Claiborne) and how she became vegan.
I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who is looking for something new or wants to own a book that will help them prepare delicious meals easily.
My favorite things about Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul

-Includes some classic soul food recipes like collard greens, mac and cheese, and vegan fried chicken.
In the book, Jenne reignites the tradition of utilizing fresh, local ingredients and puts a creative spin on classic soul food dishes such as Coconut Collard Salad and Cauliflower Fried Chicken. I love the sweet potato cookies recipe, so distinctive and delicious.
I also made the Gumbo recipe which is amazing! You won't miss the seafood and other animal products that you traditionally find in classic gumbo recipes.
The watermelon and peach salad is refreshing and tasty. I made the Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls for my mom and she was so impressed, she couldn't believe that they were vegan.
Jenne takes a deep dive into the nutritional value of some of the most popular ingredients used in soul food cooking. She highlights the fact that these ingredients are fresh and nutrient-dense however, often they are made unhealthy with the ingredients that they are paired with.
This book will teach you that vegan food doesn't have to be bland, it can be tasty and full of flavor too.
I love the desserts in the book especially the pound cakes and the cobblers. She actually includes vegan crabcakes in the book which is just mindblowing to me. I made them for a friend and she loved them so much, she makes them for her husband now.
The wonderful thing about the recipes in this book, you can literally build your entire meal plan around the recipes. They all taste so good that you can make them for your meat-eater friends and they certainly won't miss the meat.
I highly recommend Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul to anyone who wants to cut down on the meat. Also, to anyone who is struggling to start a vegan lifestyle. Many of the recipes in this book will help you to transition from eating animal products to eating plant-based foods instead. You don't have to go fully vegan but you can use these recipes for 'Meatless Monday' and for other days when you don't feel like eating meat dishes.
I am not 100 percent vegan, I eat plant-based dishes about 80 percent of the time but this book has convinced me to go 100 percent plant-based. After experiencing the blissful taste of the desserts in this book, I will never use dairy or other animal products for baking again.
I am recommending Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul to anyone who is interested in transitioning to a plant-based diet, also to anyone who is curious about trying plant-based dishes.
