It is prohibited to drink alcohol in Islam, hence there are many theories that coffee houses sprung up as an alternative to Pubs and may have been considered as a place for people to gather.

The coffee culture around the world is quite different now with all of the major cities around the world having tons of cafes, especially in business places. The coffee scene in Melbourne is at its peak. In fact, a coffee house in Melbourne is a common sight. The city of Melbourne has several cafes, bars, lounges serving the best brew and they never fail to attract a large crowd.

There are several conflicting facts on where the first coffee shop was established. However, it is believed that coffee found its way into Europe in the 17th Century via Persian coffee houses and was considered as an alternative to alcohol.

  • Turkey: It is believed that Coffee shops sprung up in Turkey as early as 1475. They took their coffee seriously and were usually served strong and black.
  • Europe: The coffee culture in Europe started gathering attention in the late 1500s. There were coffee places in the Netherlands, Paris, and other European cities. In fact, many believe that the concept of coffee with cream and sweeteners was introduced in Europe. It was a good alternative to visiting the pub where people could exchange new ideas and discuss several topics like poetry, science, etc. It also attracted politicians, writers, and thinkers where they exchanged ideas.
  • British: The idea of coffee establishment is believed to have spread to England from Turkey, with the first one in the late 1600s. It is believed the concept of tips in a coffee house originated here. The cafe culture later spread to Germany close to 1700s.
  • American: Coffee culture spread to America after it was colonized by the British, where New York was the hot spot for coffee. It was popular amongst the business community since they were located close to the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Australian: Coffee houses in Melbourne are a quite common sight but that was not always the case. The rise of coffee places took place in the late 1800s. Prior to that, drinking alcohol in excess and antisocial behaviour was quite common. The coffee shops started with small coffee shops in Melbourne near Federation Square to larger and fancy coffee places around the city. There was a big influence of the European coffee culture in Melbourne, were coffee became the preferred drink over tea. It was a place to socialize and meet.
