I began drinking coffee, in one form or another, at the age of thirteen. For me, it started out as French vanilla cappuccinos. These ridiculously sweet beverages appealed to the teenage version of me. They offered a nice energy boost from the sugar and the caffeine kept me going throughout the day.
And high school can be extremely trying on a young person. The caffeine is sometimes needed to cope with the before school practices, the full school day, the after-school clubs, and the work schedule of the evening. As teenagers, our lives were often a little fuller than they are in early adulthood. We were capable of great things in our young age. It is shocking, looking back on it, to see how full our schedules were and yet how care-free we were. Simpler times perhaps, or maybe just the naivety of youth. Whatever the case, caffeine helps a lot.
Coffee became a staple of my life early on. So much so that now, a dozen years later, I couldn't imagine a day without coffee. I also don't think I could make it through a day without coffee. I am thoroughly addicted.
But what started as a super sugary beverage for me has been worked down to drinking it straight from the pot. Sometimes I'll add a bit of sugar to counteract the bitterness of certain blends. But I won't hesitate to drink it black if that's the only option.
I'm always surprised when I meet someone who doesn't drink coffee or even tea. This is not because I think everyone consumes it, but rather because I wonder how they make it through their day without it. It is honestly a great achievement for them in my opinion.
Coffee is one of those things that you either like or hate. Not many people are on the fence about it. There are casual drinkers, social drinkers, but usually, when asked about their opinion of coffee, they don't have a very strong one.
People who drink coffee regularly have some form of opinion about coffee. Not all of them are "coffee snobs" and order twelve word long coffees when they go into Starbucks. But most people know how they like their coffee. Most people know where they prefer to get their coffee. And most people have an opinion on what constitutes as bad coffee.
Coffee is life. It is energy. It is something we can rely on. I'm sure there are many ways to get energized without consuming coffee. Exercising regularly, eating well, and sleeping well will give you extra energy. But coffee is a good substitute if you don't have time to do all of that.
I really can't imagine life without coffee. I've gone a day or two without it in the past for one reason or another and my body is not happy with me as a result. I feel sluggish. I get cranky. I get irritable. I get a headache. It is all something that I would rather avoid.
Coffee makes me a nicer person. This had been said to me by many members of my family and many friends. My addiction to coffee is no secret from the people in my life. They all gift me mugs to the point that I have no cupboard space left, but I love each and every one of them. They all ensure that I have coffee when I need it. It has just become one of those things.
I know I'm not alone in my coffee addiction. There are plenty of other people I've met and talked to in life. Coffee is a staple of most people's lives.
Coffee is good for you, as long as you don't drink it in excess. Everything in moderation.
So, if you like coffee, keep drinking it. Keep enjoying that morning pick-me-up. It may just wake you up. It may make you a better person. Or perhaps it is the only thing that gets you through the day. Whatever your reason, cheers to the coffee drinkers of the world. We are all better after our first cup.
