LIFE'S SHORT It seems like only moments ago I was born into this amazing place called Earth. With the sun on my face I spend all of my time flying everywhere in search of food. The wind carries me past grassy, flower-covered fields and through thick forests with trees reaching towards the sky. Will the wonders I see ever cease? Up ahead I see something. They are large objects and they speed past me. One after the other whizzes by. I know that I am a bug of some kind but I can't remember what those fast moving things are called. I'll get a closer look at the next one that approaches. Here it comes. Now I know! They are called cars and they are driven by humans. And I am a...a...gnat- SPLAT!!
The Encounter I really don't know if I dreamed it or whether it actually happened to me. This was about eight years ago as I was driving home one night after a ten hour work shift. I was exhausted. Alone in the car with the radio playing I looked over at the passenger seat where I had placed my empty lunch pail and my losing lottery ticket. Feeling myself falling asleep I cranked up the volume and found that even that wasn't going to keep me alert. So I slowed down and parked a safe distance from the roadway. I got out of the car and scanned the surrounding area. When I looked up at the nighttime sky I noticed a bright light to the west of me. At first I simply thought that it was a star but I noticed that it was getting brighter. I kept staring up at it and suddenly I became scared. “That thing's not a star,” I said out loud. Before I knew it, it was as big as a three-story building and the object was hovering above the trees just a few hundred feet before me. I froze. I couldn't move a muscle. My heart was beating so fast that I thought I might have a stroke or heart attack. Tears were actually rolling down my cheeks.
FOOTPRINTS IN THE SNOW Lennie and Suzie saw them as soon as they set foot into their large backyard. Overnight the gently falling snow had covered it with an all-white shimmering blanket. They had seen the snow-covered yard from their kitchen window and naturally assumed that they were to be the first ones to set foot onto it. As they stepped down from the porch they realized that someone or something had beaten them to it. Left behind in the snow were the tracks of an unknown animal. They were not exceptionally large in size but there dozens of them. They originated from under their neighbour's fence and travelled in a back and forth pattern as if to check out every tree in the yard. Lennie was only slightly ahead of his sister Suzie as he followed the animal's tracks to the largest tree in the backyard. This is where they had come to an abrupt end and Lennie and Suzie simultaneously looked up at the tree's branches. Stretched along a thick branch was a grey and white cat. At first it looked as though the cat was alone but it soon became apparent that there was an object being held down by the cat's two front paws. When the object moved the children could tell that it was a tiny yellow budgie and it was desperately trying to escape! The cat was holding the budgie down and it had no intentions of letting the bird go free.

THE LOST MOONBEAM Long, long ago on one special night, there streamed across the western skies of Montana, millions and millions of moonbeams. Oh, what a night that was! It was one of the most perfectly clear skies that Montana had ever experienced. There were flames and swirls of gold, red and yellow colours everywhere. But there was also one tiny problem. One of the moonbeams was missing! A baby moonbeam had gone off course in his travels. This had never happened before. For you see, every moonbeam is magically counted. If, for example, one million moonbeams were to set off from the moon and head for planet earth, but out of the one million, one was missing, that would never do!
THE OLD MANTLE CLOCK He was just a child when he first saw the old clock on his parents’ mantle place. It had already been handed down from generation to generation. There was a hint that this clock was somewhat special though. As the legend goes, it apparently has some kind of magical powers. Exactly what those are, has never been revealed. Bill had placed it on his mantel many years ago. About four years ago it inexplicably stopped working.
The Love Of Gracie And Tyler Gracie and Tyler, now this was a pair of unlikely lovers. They met when they were youngsters and for some unknown reason, began arguing with each other from day one. As time passed they eventually tolerated one another. As more time passed, they fell in love. In hindsight, maybe it was something that was always meant to be. A love such as theirs comes along once in a very long while.
MY SUPER HERO When I was just a young man there were many super heroes who I looked up to and admired. There were TV, comic book, and movie theatre
THE WILL Jack sat back on his easy chair looking up at the ceiling. A refreshing late August breeze flowed in from the two large windows in his front room. His wife was at her sister's house for their weekly get-together. Jack turned on the CD player and the first track of relaxing music started to play.

THROUGH THE LENS Austin's family moved into their new apartment building only yesterday and he was excited when he saw it. It wasn't anything inside his apartment, it was the view across the way. Being on the fourteenth floor it offered him an excellent vantage point to observe the other apartment units opposite his building.
HOME Chantelle couldn't have been more excited. She had completed her schooling in England and she had passed! Far more exciting was the realization that she would soon be returning home to America and be reunited with her family. Home to her siblings and especially home to her mother and father. There could not have been anything more wonderful happening in her life at this moment.

While in England she had saved every penny she could for that one-way ticket back to America. Her life for those two and a half years in England was not easy. Every spare moment was spent studying. The other times were spent at her workplace so that she could save enough money for the trip back home. There was no time for partying although her friends constantly urged her to go out. Chantelle stood her ground. She was determined to pass her exams and so she did.
FLOWER MAN With her head looking down and concentrating on her shopping list, Sandra was unaware of the old man standing at the end of her check-out lane. He stood there waiting for her to finish paying for her items. She started to push the shopping cart along and as she began to exit the area he approached her with his arm outstretched holding a bundle of freshly-cut flowers. He was wearing a well-worn brown suit and fedora hat.
WRITER'S DILEMMA Right now I am lying on my pillow and there are hundreds of orange-coloured feathers flying around in my bedroom. With my hands I am rapidly 'swishing' them away, trying to get them out of my face so that I can breathe properly again. For a few moments I thought they were real. But I am getting ahead of myself. I will start my story at the very beginning.
BUSTER IN THE BASEMENT Buster was a stubborn grumpy old man who, if there was one, would be awarded a trophy for holding the world’s longest grudge against someone. Years ago he and his wife had had a heated argument. Buster’s pride forced him to make a foolish decision. He stormed off telling his wife that he was going to live in the basement from now on. And that is just what he did-he stormed downstairs to the basement and that was twenty years ago! Since that time they have not spoken to each other. They never acknowledged one another even when they periodically passed each other on the stairwell or in the laundry room. He would just shrug his shoulders and ignore his wife. It was his decision and that is where he stayed, in the basement of a duplex house built in the late eighteen hundreds.

Dead Or Alive? Of course he had to be there. There was no question about it. Gordon is Bill's best friend. Gordon’s brother, Gus, had died suddenly and Gordon along with his family was in mourning. At the funeral home it happened again and no one else noticed. Bill watched as Gordon's brother sat up inside the coffin and looked around! But it didn’t freak Bill out because things like that have been happening to him all of his life.

RAINBOW COVE It has stood for over two hundred and fifty years atop a hillside at Rainbow Cove. Over the many years it proudly lit the way for countless ships and their seamen. Sadly, the old gas-lit lighthouse has been vacant since the late 1930’s, succumbing to the more modern electric lighthouse a few miles down the coastline. Alone it stands, dark and empty for over seventy years. With it has been left countless stories handed down throughout those years.

THAT OLD MAN He was known as ‘that old man’ and lived alone just across the street from our house. He was always friendly to the neighbours and their children. He was a handyman of sorts. Genuinely happy to help out when something went wrong with a kid’s bicycle or other mechanical device.
CHRISTMASES OF LONG AGO As I sit back in my comfortable chair and watch the snow begin to gently fall, I am reminded of Christmases long ago. I think back to my family during the holidays. I can still see the snow laden windowsill of my mother's kitchen and hear the hubbub coming from the living room as my brothers and sisters compete with one another in order to have their say. The front doorbell rings as friends and relatives drop by for their seasonal visits. My parents' house seemed to be the central gathering place each year. It really is true, the years do go by more quickly, the older you become.
THE CHRISTMAS SNOWFLAKE Cameron, being a typical eight year old boy, has an imagination that is sometimes out of this world. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Christmas time was soon approaching and this fact had given him a fantastic idea. While walking home from school with his best friend, he told him of his latest plan to keep a part of Christmas with him all year long.
THE SEARCH “Where are you now?” spoke Caylen into the walkie-talkie's microphone. “I'm down here by the creek,” replied Louis. “Are you coming?”
THE MYSTERY OF THE EMPTY HOUSE I am completely stumped. To date, that house has been empty for over six years and no one can figure out why. My brother and his wife live just a couple of miles away and they have no idea why anyone would buy an expensive house, then leave it empty for years. Every now and then they drive past it just to be sure that it's still empty. Even at night they haven't even seen a single light on in the house.
LEAH’S GIFT Little Leah was in trouble now. She heard her mother’s voice calling her and she didn’t know what to do. Hurriedly she scrambled to get as much as possible into the box and slid it under her bed. There was no time to put the rest away. She sat back onto the floor while all around her were clippings of her hair and some of her doll’s as well. There was a roll of tape, a couple of brown paper bags and a pink ribbon. It was too late. Her mother was standing in the doorway with a shocked expression on her face and her mouth was wide open.

NISSASSA THE ASSASSIN He slept soundly while standing precariously on the ledge of the building. In the dead of night the cold hard pavement forty stories below was invisible. This was the only way Jerry could sleep. Surely his enemies could not find him there or so he thought. Jerry was completely unaware of the fact that the killer was only inches away. Closer he crept until he could get no closer to his victim. A sudden push and Jerry was over the edge and heading towards certain death! Of course the shock of being awakened so abruptly forced Jerry to automatically spread his wings and he glided down to a safe landing.

He sat staring in a daze at the round black clock on the wall above the officer's desk. It was the largest Syden had ever seen before. He mentally compared it to the one in his computer room at home. This was larger by a long shot. His attention turned to a rather large stain on the ceiling.

THE OLD TRAIN “Oh no!” Michelle called out realizing that her necklace was gone. “I must have lost it on the train.”
