What is Karma?

Karma is a Hindu concept, but the concept itself has been adapted and utilized by many other cultures and societies from around the world. For centuries, scholars and thinkers have debated what karma really is, who created it, and how it applies to modern-day life.

Most religions and philosophies about karma maintain that one's good acts will lead to benefits in this life and ones bad acts will result in negative consequences. However, some theories hold that karma is actually a force that acts within us to produce the results of our thoughts, words, and deeds.

The Philosophies of Karma

According to several religious philosophies, karma is something or someone that surrounds us at every turn. In Hinduism, karma is the combination of our bodies and minds that are subjected to numerous karmic bonds, much like the way that a material body surrounding the soul results in physical and mental ailments.

In some forms of Buddhism, karma is considered to be a date, which is the actual act of creating something with our own two hands. Hindu philosophers think that the idea of karmic bonds connects the body and mind of each and every individual, which means that there is not just one kind of karma, but rather an infinite number of it.

The Beliefs of Karma

Contrary to popular belief, karma does not make a person more or less intelligent, lazy, or religious. Many people confuse karma with determinism, which is the idea that all future events are already set in stone.

The great law of karma states that whatever actions a person or creature does in this lifetime will affect their karmic deeds or consequences in the next life. Therefore, a person who is kind and generous today may become evil and greedy tomorrow. In other words, karma works both ways. One can be kind today and do terrible things in the future.

Types of Karma

Most people believe that karmic actions are separated into two groups: good karma or bad karma. This belief stems from the fact that during their lifetime, people produce both good and bad thoughts, feelings, and actions, thus affecting their deeds and consequences in both the present and the future.

This duality is what creates the idea of karmic debts and punishments. However, it is important to note that these beliefs are completely erroneous.

Good Karma and Bad Karma

Good Karma and Bad Karma are two sides of the same coin. They simply don't exist on their own. They are two sides of one and both exist together in a constant state of manifestation within us. The karmic law works like this. It determines what will be taken into the material world and what won't be.

  1. The karmic law is a powerful invisible force that shapes all future lives. It directs all entities as they travel through life, influences our actions, and even transforms the very course of our existence. Good karma and bad karma both come from our past actions.
  2. The universe was created in such a way that what is here today will be gone tomorrow. Everything that you experience or have experienced will be remembered by your next incarnation.
  3. This is how karma works. Good and evil are nothing more than labels that we assign to our actions in the material world. The true nature of things is either good or bad according to the laws of the universe. There is no middle ground in this world, everything is either right or wrong.
  4. When we commit good deeds, we receive good karma from the universe. This karma flows forth into our lives without our control. This also results in our having good deeds in every aspect of our lives. A good karma meditation should be developed in order to cultivate good deeds in one's life in order to transform them into beneficial and meaningful ones.
  5. In our daily lives, all of us work hard to make things right. Everything, whether it is money, love, friends, or negative thoughts, can be attributed to the choices we make. If we chose to do bad things, this vibrational alignment in our lives will manifest as negative vibration. This will affect all aspects of our lives, including our finances, personal relationships, health, and careers.
  6. Good karma is actually a very complex concept. Good refers to our good actions, while bad is used to describe our negative actions. If you work hard at something but fail, it does not mean that you are a failure. You simply did not create enough good energy to manifest the results you desire.
  7. Our karma is actually a construct of our mind. What you think will come around comes around. If you are kind, compassionate, truthful, and loving, this will be manifested in your aura. People with these characteristics are attracting all kinds of good energy into their lives. Karma is described as the result of your thoughts manifesting in your life. This is why kindness and compassion are considering a form of karmic love.
  8. The key benefit of being kind and compassionate is that it extends throughout the universe. Even if you have done wrong in the past, by consistently showing kindness and compassion towards others, you can go around doing good deeds in the future.
  9. With a positive outlook, you can live your life in a state of gratitude rather than focusing on your past misdeeds. This helps you move on with your spiritual life, which in turn manifests in a higher quality of health and wealth. In the spiritual world, forgiveness is essential if you are to move forward with the laws of the universe.
  10. It is said that you are in charge of your life experience. If you choose to create the kind of life experience you desire, you send out karmic energy that is in the form of good or bad fortune. By choosing to do good deeds, you give out a different energy field that is seen as being in alignment with the laws of the universe. This gives you a better chance of experiencing inner peace.
  11. If you are in a place where you are constantly burdened with bad karma from past events, it is essential that you work toward changing this pattern. This can be accomplished by focusing on the things you want to attract into your life - good or bad.
  12. Another way to improve your love karma is through daily practice of compassion meditation. In this technique, you simply observe and take note of how you feel about different situations and people. After doing so for a period of time, you simply begin to cultivate compassion for yourself and others.
  13. As you become more compassionate, bad karma starts to slowly slip away. Engaging in compassion meditation and daily reflection will not only help you improve your personal relationship with others, but it also has the added benefit of improving the quality of your life overall.

Manifestation of the Karma

The truth is that karma is nothing more than thinking manifested into actions. A poor man may acquire poverty by thinking that he is poor, but it will still be the result of previous actions.

Likewise, a wealthy man will acquire wealth by thinking that he is wealthy, which will still be the result of previous actions. Thus, it makes no difference what thoughts you have, whether good or bad, you will always end up doing actions that correspond with your thoughts.

The reason behind this is the Buddhist concept of Karma. According to the teachings of Buddha, all things are caused by karma. When a person commits a crime, it will be an effect karma that was caused by previous bad thoughts and actions. This also includes the good thoughts and actions that were done in the past in accordance with those thoughts.

Some Examples of Karma

For example, if someone steals something from you, it is likely that you will have some kind of consequences, such as anger or punishment. However, this does not mean that you were thinking about the act of stealing at that moment; you had been thinking about it beforehand, so it could be considered karma.

Similarly, it can be said that a person who helps others in need will receive some form of rewards karma; even if the giver does not directly receive something good at that moment, he/she will receive some form of favor karma from this action. Thus, if you want to be a good person in everyday life, you should practice being a good karma example.

Conclusion

One way to make sure that you are practicing karma in everyday life is to always look at your actions with a detached manner, devoid of any emotion or sentiment.

For example, never intentionally plant negative thoughts into your mind about something, such as the way you feel about your current situation. Instead, take note of things you do that are beneficial to yourself. In many cases, this can be much more motivating than dwelling on your past actions.
