Jerry Prevo apointment is controversial

Liberty University alumni are voicing their displeasure regarding the man who has taken the place of former Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. In 1978 Jerry Prevo along with other pastors supported an ordinance that would prevent the LBGTQ community from having certain rights. In 1980 Prevo started a chapter of the ultra conservative Moral Majority in Alaska. This organization was started by Jerry Falwell Sr. and opposed women's rights to choose abortion as well as being against Gay Americans. In 2019 Provo a former pastor was quoted as saying, “Young people these days, I don’t think they know what God says about” homosexuality, Prevo said last year. “Therefore, they are endorsing it".

In 2013, Anchorage Baptist the church that Provo previously pastored, shut down their Boy Scout troop after it was announced that the scouts would no longer discriminate against homosexuals. Not everyone shares the sentiments of the new acting president and they are speaking out about it. The group Save 71, was created by Liberty University alumni, and they are opposed to Jerry Prevo being appointed to run the school. The group says Provo is one of Jerry Falwell Jr’s “greatest enablers” when it comes to what they describe as a toxic workplace environment at the school.

Jerry Prevo and wife Carol

Prevo's appointment is a disappointment to the Alumni and will surely bring additional controversy to Liberty University. For years people have been stating off the record that there is a culture of fear at the University and that employees at Liberty as well as those in the Lynchburg community are intimidated by the Falwell's and treat them like Royalty. All of this revolves around Jerry Falwell Jr.'s recent behavior as well as allegations regarding his wife Becky. Falwell has been accused of bragging about the size of his penis and passing around suggestive photos of his spouse.

Three young men have now come forth alleging that they had sexual relations with Becky Falwell and that she was the aggressor. There are emails, and texts that seem to back up these claims. Becky Falwell spoke out saying that Christians should forgive her as Jesus did, but this is an issue of accountability and not forgiveness. Liberty has strict policies in place for students regarding drinking and sexual activity so it seems that the Falwells are not practicing what they preach. Jerry Jr. allegedly has been seen drinking in public with his son, while the school frowns upon the students using alcohol and being sexually active.

In addition, Jerry Jr. had photos surface where he was hugging a woman who is not his wife and they both had their pants unzipped. Falwell is also one of the biggest Trump supporters and many Evangelicals have been outraged by this association and have expressed that Donald Trump does not exhibit true Christian values, but promotes hate and intolerance. He also wore a coronavirus mask with a blackface image and now it seems the Liberty brass are finally deciding that enough is enough. The University has a diverse student body, yet the former and current leaders do not seem to embrace everyone who attends the school.

Now, the board of directors has chosen Prevo, a man to lead the University who is openly and unashamedly against the LBGTQ community.Jerry Prevo was born in Oak Ridge Tennesee on January 12, 1945. Prior to being chosen as interim president, Provo was the chairman of the Liberty board of trustees. Jerry Falwell Jr. is on a paid indefinite leave of absence but some say he should lose his job permanently. If this happens, perhaps and there is enough opposition to Provo's appointment, that the board may decide on someone completely different to head the prestigious University.
