E-learning via active learning and passive learning (source:https://www.wrefresh.in)

E-learning is the method of learning using electronic technologies like internet, video conferencing & learning management systems (LMS) platforms. There are two types of e-learning:

1. Passive learning 2. Active learning

Passive e-learning

This is a method where a tutor uses LMS platform to teach pre-recorded tutorials or classes. Students can go through the videos and post doubts in the specified section. In most cases these doubts are cleared within a day.

Advantages

  1. The students can go through the curriculum at their pace
  2. Less costly as tutor creates and uploads the content in one go

Disadvantages

  1. Less interactive when compared to active e-learning
  2. Limitations is understanding concepts and doubt clearing

Examples for passive e-learning platforms are Lynda, Udemy ,Open Culture etc.

Active e-learning

This is the method where tutor takes classes via live streaming. Students can join the classroom, interact with the tutor & clear doubts. These live streams may or may not be recorded for the future references.

Advantages

  1. Interactive classes
  2. Doubts can be cleared on the go

Disadvantages

  1. Students have to be present at perticular time to attend classes
  2. Cost of learning on higher side as tutor has to be available throughout the course period.

Examples of active e-learning are webinars and classes happening via zoom, skype and custom LMS platforms.

Choosing the technology for your platform

E-learning platforms or Learning management systems (LMS) are of two types:

  1. Custom LMS
  2. Content management system (CMS) based LMS

Custom LMS

Custom LMS is required when your teaching techniques or content is different from the industry standards. Check Scrimba , which is a custom LMS platform to learn coding. They use interactive screens where students can experiment with their code and see the results. This has resulted in experiment based learning which more effective than classroom based learning.

A custom LMS will increase your development cost, time of development and demands higher IT infrastructure to maintain. But it also gives you the freedom to experiment on new methods of teaching and functionalities.

Content management system (CMS) based LMS

A content management system (CMS) is an application that is used to manage web content, allowing multiple contributors to create, edit and publish. Content in a CMS is typically stored in a database and displayed in a presentation layer based on a set of templates.

If you want to create an LMS which is similar to what is already in use, it is always better to choose a CMS based web application. Most common CMS platforms are Wordpress, Wix and Squarespace.

The main advantage is that already existing themes and plugins can be used to create a web application which reduces the development cost and time. It is fairly easy to maintain too. The main downside is that customization is limited to what is offered by the theme or plugin. If you need a special customization you can go for a custom plugin or theme development.

Choose the right developer

Choosing right developer for your project is as important as choosing the technology. Development companies or freelancers having experience in developing LMS systems will surly enrich your web application.
