Ughhhh, I have to attend zoom lectures again...........? This is getting so boring.

This is exactly how I feel every morning. Don't get me wrong I enjoy learning, but honestly online classes suck. But being safe is far more important than getting bored, right? As a microbiologist, I can guarantee you that viruses mean bad business. It took me some time to get used to learning online. And, I came up with a list of few things that are essential to improve the outcomes in online classes:

1. Set Goals

Write down what you wish to accomplish each day, due dates, upcoming events either in a planner or a calendar. Mix up what you are planning to study or work on! Switching subjects can help your brain to focus. Go ahead, write it down and make it colorful and vibrant just like your eyeshadows. Break large tasks into smaller ones so it's less daunting. Figure out what works best for you. At the end of the day reflect on what you have accomplished. You won't believe it, but when you set your mind to something, you can actually accomplish a lot.

2. Keep your camera on during zoom meetings

Keeping your camera on during zoom meetings encourages you to pay attention. It also urges you to ask questions and be active during in-class activities. It makes you feel comfortable to take advantage of Professors' or TA's office hours. But, you do not have to keep it on if it makes you feel anxious and unsafe.

3. Keep your Phone away

Getting distracted because of cellphones is one of the biggest challenges of the virtual class. It's tempting to check Instagram for the new posts or Twitter for the latest gossips, especially when lecture starts to get boring and no one is there to stop you, right? But, is the lecture really boring, or does it seem boring because you aren't interested in learning new things? You are paying for those classes, so keep your phone away during online lectures and learn.

4. Give yourself enough Credit

Online classes might make you feel like you are not learning anything. We all are indeed in the same pandemic, but the way it is affecting you can be different from the way it is affecting me. Maybe you counted spare change to make rent last week or maybe you just lost your job or failed your first test but you never gave up. You kept your chin held high and embraced the rough circumstances life has been throwing your way. Pat yourself in the back for trying. Why do you ask? Because you deserve all the love for trying your best.

5. Focus on Your Mental health

Try to do something just for yourself, whether it is making your favorite recipe, watching your favorite show, going for a quick run, or something else entirely. But, if you are like me who doesn't like walking during winter, you could meditate or dance indoors. You can also write a story for vocal, paint, crochet, or simply do any little activity that makes you happy and refreshed. Write three things you are thankful for each day. And more importantly, make sure to seek help when you've been feeling down for multiple days in a row and when you aren't enjoying things you normally do.

2021 has already been "a lot" for some of us and frankly, online classes can be hard to keep up with. However, we are all in this together and we are going to get through this!!
