No, it's not as scary as this! But it will take a hard look and some organized planning.

First, the good.

1.) You're brave, unconventional, open minded, and confident.

2.) You have a tremendous opportunity to turn your children into life long learners who have passionate interests and job satisfaction.

3.) You're willing to experiment.

4.) You have your young people excited about getting away from excessive virtual learning.

The bad.

It's not fair to say "bad" let's call them challenges.

1.) Finding the resources that will help you address most curriculum requirements.

2.) Finding and reviewing study materials.

3.) Recruiting friends and neighbors.

4.) Assessing the costs.

5.) Negotiating with your school district for permission to proceed. As previously mentioned this varies by state to state and some are very easy to accommodate.

The ugly?

1.) It's work that takes preparation and enthusiasm. Young people are showing poor results and disenfranchisement with virtual learning. That's why at the very least, you should integrate some "homeschooling" in to your home based school program.

2.) Expect resistance from your children..Extremely low attention spans are prevalent. Give breaks with healthy snacks ( or make them together) , make time to play with manipulative objects (Lego, molecular models, rubic cubes, puzzles, etc. Outdoor exercise, games, maybe some art classes. Just get them away from the screen.

3.) If you don't use contemporary culture or news you will lose them right away. Children are now mostly "visual learners." Have ways to teach with this medium. Stream historical shows, use David Attenborough!!!

Don't wait to hear " why is this relevant?"

4.) There are times when you will be totally exhausted; dinner is not done, and you have to drive an hour to make a 7pm basketball game. Sometimes it will take superhuman energy to get your commitments fulfilled. You're not perfect or inexhaustible. Sometimes you'll disappoint. Just like children have to learn failure they must also learn to accept disappointment. You're not a bad parent but a better one for it!
