History teachers – are you in demand? If you've had your teaching qualifications for more than a few years, I'm sure you've felt at times like the only thing that's changing is the technology . . . and just how far we have to chase our students to get them to sit down and listen!

Teaching has been a part of my life for more than 18 years, and over the years I've heard from many teachers that there's a shortage of jobs out there. But wait . . . what about data recently released by the ACTU and Phil Willis MP that indicates a shortage in history teachers around the country?

What they say doesn't fit with what we've heard from our friends and colleagues, so which is it?

History teachers are in demand around the country.

Since the start of the year, history has been one of the most in-demand subjects for teachers. The number of advertised jobs for history teachers has risen by 12% since January 2018, according to data from jobs site Adzuna. That makes it one of the fastest growing subjects in teaching this year.

It is also one of the most popular subjects for students at A-level and GCSE and is expected to remain so as long as there’s a shortage of teachers. The government has said it wants to bring in 10,000 new trainee teachers each year to deal with rising pupil numbers.

But this will only take us so far – there are currently over 50,000 unfilled teacher vacancies across England alone.

High school teachers have the most job opportunities available.

History teachers are in demand, but not as much as other subjects. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are more than 1 million elementary school teachers and more than 800,000 high school teachers in the U.S. The BLS also reports that an additional 150,000 middle school teachers are needed.

The BLS predicts that the number of teaching jobs will increase by 7 percent by 2022, which is faster than the average job growth rate of 5 percent expected for all occupations over the same time period. A History Teacher's Day Job The typical day on the job for a history teacher includes attending staff meetings at school and preparing lessons plans for classes.

They may spend their time grading papers or helping students with projects in class. History teachers may also be called upon to mentor students outside of class time if they have shown potential or interest in history or related subjects like political science or English literature.

Teachers certified to teach in more than one area are typically in higher demand than classroom teachers who are certified to teach in just one area.

History teachers – are you in demand? The answer is yes! History teachers are in high demand. Why? Because history is a subject that helps students develop critical thinking skills, communicate effectively and understand how to use technology to solve problems. History teachers also serve as mentors for students who are interested in pursuing careers in the field of education.

Teachers certified to teach in more than one area are typically in higher demand than classroom teachers who are certified to teach in just one area. This is especially true for history teachers. Teachers with certification in both social studies and history have a greater range of options when it comes to choosing a school district or teaching position.

History teachers are also needed because they can help prepare students for higher education programs such as medical school, law school and business administration programs where they will be required to take courses on American or world history. In order to be competitive with other applicants, these individuals must have a strong background in history that includes knowledge of current events, government policies and cultural trends throughout the years.

History teachers not only teach important lessons about our past but they also help students develop valuable life skills that can be applied later on during their working careers.

Salary and the cost of living can vary greatly by region.

History teachers – are you in demand? The demand for history teachers is increasing, with more than 90% of governments or schools around the world advertising for history teachers. History is the second most popular subject to study at university after English language and literature. Teaching history at secondary school level is a popular career choice and there are many different routes into teaching history.

Many universities offer undergraduate degrees in history, which usually lead to PGCE degrees that qualify graduates to teach secondary school pupils. Teaching jobs are advertised in national newspapers such as The Guardian and The Times Education Supplement (TES). There are also online job search engines such as TeachSearch and TES Jobs.

You can search these sites by region and by subject area to find jobs that match your interests and skillsets.

In a nutshell

If you're a high school history teacher – or college history teacher – there's a good chance you won't be out of work any time in the very near future. For the most part, teachers still earn positive praise from students when it comes to curriculum, demand and qualifications. That said, schools and districts may have to start looking at other ways to incentive history teachers to stay on board.
