A Voracious Reader Can Become a Good Writer

Every reader does not become a writer. However, every writer used to be a reader. It does help to be a reader before a person tries to be a writer. The best way to understand the craft of writing is to read the works of several writers. You will find a few writers whose works resonate with you. There will be something about their style and the way in which they express themselves through their writings that inspires you to become a writer. Could you name a few of the writers whose style that you like, without thinking too much? Those are the writers, whose writings have had an impact on you. Their writing styles are the type of writing that you need to replicate. It will only be after a year of writing in different styles, that you will find your own voice, which is your unique writing style.

You must be having a few writers, whose books you must read on a regular basis. A few of my favourite writers are Louis L’ Amour, James Patterson, Lee Child, John Grisham, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe and Tom Clancy to name just a few. These writers inspired me to become a writer myself and to walk on the Writer’s Way.

In my opinion, I feel that for a writer to become any good in his or her craft, she or he needs to be a voracious reader. However, just being a good reader is not enough, the person needs to practice the art and craft of writing. Practice makes perfect. Sometimes, doing a course in creative writing if you want to be a fiction writer is a good option. Personally, I did not do any course in writing, instead, I invested in books by popular authors on the literary craft.

Every writer used to be a reader of the genre, he or she writes about daily. When a writer knows what his or her readers want and look out for in a fiction or non-fiction book, he or she can provide them with what they need in the book that they write.

What does every reader want from a book? I feel that every reader wants to be entertained by the author. If the first few pages of the book do not interest the reader, the book will be thrown away and another book by yet another author will be taken up. It is up to the author to hook the reader from the very beginning of the story. Every book that you write, which is not appreciated or loved by the reader, will lead to you losing a reader for life. Yes, readers will not usually return to read your work, if your first book does not interest them. We cannot all write interesting books all the time, we will lose readers. But, we will also gain faithful readers with every exceptional fiction or non-fiction book that we write.

Any writer who wants to have loyal readers needs to take care of his or her reader's interests. He or she needs to be aware of the type of readers his or her books are written for in order for them to be a success. If a writer wants to cater to teenage readers, he or she needs to focus on the current trends in that niche of the fiction market. Whatever the readership category, the aspiring author needs to study the books in that particular niche and note all the elements that make books popular. Popular books in any niche, ultimately become bestsellers, with loyal readers, a dedicated fanbase of followers, and which make the author a bestselling author on all publishing platforms.

Authors are also required to be in touch with their readers through social media platforms. It is the author, who is the best spokesperson for his or her book. The readers are always eager to know the mind of the author. Book Covers are equally important in making a book a bestseller. Hopefully, the few points discussed above will inspire you to take up the literary craft, to persevere, and finally produce your first bestseller, either on your first try or after a few that do not do as well.

Whatever the outcome, never give up on your dream of becoming a published author, because anyone can be an author today. A successful author is one who practices his or her craft diligently.
