3 Things Educators can Use to Connect to Students

On most occasions, teachers have always talked about their helplessness when trying to connect with their students. Besides, the time when the teacher's duty was to provide students with education only are long gone. In some cases, people might say that those days never existed. Thus, it is essential to provide more than education as some students spend their best part of the day in school escaping a harsh life at home. It is also vital for a teacher to understand that there is more in a student's life than the life they live in class. Below are some of the things you can use as a teacher to connect with your students.

Extra-Curricular Activities

As a teacher, you should dedicate some of your time to attending co-curricular activities for your students. Even though you might be so immersed in pursuing a better career in teaching, finding time will help connect with your students in a better way. Besides, you should show interest and participate in the students' interests if you want them to be interested in your education. Most students feel free with a closer teacher and are happy to see that the teacher cares. If you attend their co-curricular activities, there is always a giant of waves and excitement in your students. Besides, some students feel better and at peace more than if a family member attended the activities.

Another crucial issue is connecting with the student's family during these activities. By interacting with your student's parents in an informal setting, you will have a meaningful conversation about the student. In this setting, you can share some of the home issues and class issues and work on them together. Besides, parents feel comfortable while talking to teachers who have invested more in their child's success. You can be part of the student's co-curricular activities by attending a hockey game where your students are participating.

Availability

Some of the things that pay off in a student's life are availability. You can achieve this by arriving in school early and dealing with students' issues before lessons begin. At this time, students can come to talk to you, consult on some concepts that they did not understand, or relax in your presence. Apart from being available, you can participate in online empathy training for educators in order to improve how you handle your students. As a teacher, you can also tell your students to email you or even schedule an appointment for better management. It is quite surprising how some students take advantage of the open door, precisely what you should offer them. This way, some students will still reach out to you even when you are no longer teaching them.

Use the First Five Minutes

The first five minutes in class is something every teacher should embrace. This is one of the most straightforward tools you can use to connect with your students. Always take the first five minutes to engage your students in just a normal conversation. Ask them about how their day is fairing on and if they have some exciting developments. For instance, you can talk about music, gaming, television shows as well as movies.

By listening to student's views, you get to learn more about your students every day. Besides, you get to achieve a different level of interaction with your students. In this interaction, you will realize any student facing hardships at home based on the answers they will give in the interaction. For instance, you can count on your students being leaders in some of the discussions you hold because they are always talking about new books. Such interactions develop some of the most vital connections with students and can even help struggling learners and kids facing other challenges.

All three tools are quite different and need different levels of effort to make them work. To some teachers, it may take more than five years of teaching to connect with students. For others, it sounds so easy for them to communicate with students as they are mothers and fathers, making it easy to maneuver. Although many education curricula talk about student-teacher interaction, not many teachers have embraced the idea. However, you can employ the above things to improve interaction and connection with your students for a successful education. Also, do not be limited to these tools as there are many other ways of developing a connection with your students for everyone’s own good.
