Criminals hope they’ll commit the perfect crime, never facing consequences for their dirty deeds. Many do escape punishment, some convince themselves they’ll get away with their crimes, and others almost get away with it...and THEN….

Six Robberies Committed by a ... Black Man...

Conrad Zdzierak, a white man from Cincinnati, Ohio fit into both the second and third categories. He was confident that his bank robbery plan was fool-proof and he was almost right. Police identified a man who witnesses identified as the perp in a total of six robberies, leading to his prompt arrest.

One of the robberies occurred on March 5, 2010. The other five took place on the same day, April 9, 2010. Five robberies occurred at banks; one occurred at a CVS pharmacy.

Exactly how did Zdzierak think he would commit the perfect crime?

It was a Silicone Mask!

The white man wore a silicone face mask designed to resemble a Black man.

Yup, witnesses reported that a Black man had robbed the bank.

Once still shots from the robbery made it to the news, the bank robber was nabbed. Except it wasn’t the real bank robber. It was a man who looked EXACTLY like the mask.

That’s my damn luck. Seriously.

The mask looked so much like the local man, his own mother thought her son was a serial bank robber, admitting to the police it definitely appeared to be her son. His friends began to call the police to report their friend as the perpetrator.

Police arrested the man.

Lucky for him, his alibi checked out. He was working at the time of the robberies.

Of course, no one suspected that the bank robber wore a mask, especially one resembling a man of another race.

The Perfect Crime

Zdzierak thought he committed the perfect crimes. He envisioned himself spending the more than $15,000 in cash he snagged during the robberies, free of worry or angst. But he was wrong. So wrong.

Busted!

Police apprehended Zdzierak at an Ohio hotel after his girlfriend found two masks and dyed money from the robberies and called authorities. Police began an investigation into the case and recovered emails between Zdzierak and the mask company as well as a document of notes describing things that he felt went wrong during the commission of the robberies and a list of ways he could improve his strategy.

Zdzierak’s lawyer, Christopher McDowell, made a statement on behalf of his client, stating, “Conrad apologizes to everyone, is sorry for any harm he has caused and accepts responsibility for his actions.”

25-Years Behind Bars

Zdzierdak was charged with six counts each of aggravated robbery, robbery, and weapons under disability. He faced up to 35-years in prison if convicted on all charges. Under a plea deal, Zdzierdak pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery and five counts of robbery. The remaining 12 counts were dismissed. Zdzierak was sentenced to 10-years on aggravated robbery and five years each for robbery, two counts ordered to serve concurrently, tallying his term to an aggregate term of 25-years.

Jonathan Magbie died in jail on the fourth day of a 10-day marijuana conviction sentence. The 27-year-old was paralyzed from the neck down and needed a ventilator, wheelchair, and 24-hour care. Despite the jail promising they had the necessary equipment and staff to care for Magbie, he was hospitalized within hours of his booking, only for the hospital to release him and refuse to readmit him, despite jail officials pleading for them to do so.

Magbie had never been convicted of a crime before he was found riding as a passenger in a car with marijuana, four grams of cocaine, and a handgun. He admitted to the judge in court that he smoked marijuana to ease the pain he felt every day. The gun charge was dismissed. Most criminals convicted (at this time) of minor marijuana convictions were handed down probation sentences, but a judge denied Magbie's request.
