“The hand that killed your sons now masturbates to the memory. F**k you all.”

TJ Lane muttered those words during his sentencing hearing in 2012. The 18-year-old was convicted of a killing spree at Chardon High School near Cleveland, Ohio, that wounded three students and left three dead.

TJ stood up in the cafeteria around 7:30 a.m. and began shooting students using a handgun. Chaos erupted and students ran in every direction. Teacher Joseph Ricci and football coach Frank Hall chased Lane out of the school after several minutes. Police apprehended him a short time later.

Why Did TJ Shoot Students at School?

TJ and one of the victims, Russell King Jr. did not like each other and had problems prior to the day of the shooting. King Jr. began dating TJ’s former girlfriend. King told Lane he was going to beat him up and for a year before the murder, had begun weightlifting to prepare to fight the boy.

King Jr. was the first person Lane shot in the cafeteria that morning. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead the following day at 12:42 a.m.

It is unclear why Lane shot the other five students.

Ineligible for Death Penalty

Since TJ committed the killing spree when he was 17-years-old, he was ineligible for the death penalty. After pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder, and one count of felonious assault, the court sentenced Lane to three life sentences without the possibility of parole.

TJ Disrespectful in Court

TJ showed no remorse during his trial. Instead, he attacked and mocked the court and family of the deceased.

He unbuttoned his blue dress shirt, revealing his white jail-issued t-shirt which he wrote the word “Killer” across in black marker. TJ then smiled and gestured his middle finger to the court as he said, “The hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to the memory. F**k all of you.”

TJ Escapes From Prison

TJ and three other inmates escaped from the Lima Correctional Institute prison on the evening of September 11, 2014. The men were quickly captured the following morning and sent to Ohio State Penitentiary, a supermax security prison in Youngstown, Ohio.

2017 School Shootings

At least 12 other school shootings took place in 2017, including a September 13 attack at Freeman High School in Rockford, WA. Three students were injured and one died after 15-year-old Caleb Sharpe opened fire with an AR-15 before it jammed. He then switched to a handgun and continued shooting. He was stopped by a janitor.

On December 7 shooting at Aztec High School. William Atchison, 21, snuck into the school disguised as a student. He hid in an unlocked washroom with a 9mm Glock handgun.

A custodian spotted him hiding in the washroom and began yelling “active shooter,” “lockdown.” Atchinson shot and killed two students before he was caught in the hallway. He then shot and killed himself.
