The Sex Slave Murders

Gerald and Christine Gallego turned their dark sexual desires into a homicidal rampage ending with the deaths of at least 10 young people

By True Crime WriterPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

We had this sexual fantasy, see, so we just carried it out….I mean, like, it was easy and fun and we really enjoyed it, so why shouldn’t we do it?” —Charlene Gallego

Gerald Gallego and his wife, Charlene, were dubbed the “Love Slave Killers” after the pair lured teenage girls and women, often at gunpoint, into their van where they would rape them before shooting them in the head or killing them by blunt force trauma. The murderous spree began in California in 1978.

Gerald’s Childhood

Gerald’s life of crime began well before he met Charlene Williams. He grew up in a dysfunctional home, his mother a prostitute; his father a criminal executed in the Mississippi gas chamber in 1955 after he shot a police officer during a prison escape.

At age 13, Gerald sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl. He had been arrested 23 times up until he met Charlene.

Williams Life

Williams grew up much differently than Gerald, coming from a loving, supportive family. Nonetheless, after meeting and marrying a heroin addict, Charlene herself began abusing drugs and alcohol and life changed dramatically. The couple eventually divorced and Charlene would repeat the process two times before meeting Gerald.

A Love Affair Begins

Charlene and Gerland moved in within a week of meeting each other, marrying soon thereafter. She was attracted to his machismo and began indulging in those fantasies with him. Gerald brought home a 16-year-old girl and the three had a threesome together.

Gerald Molests His Daughters

Gerald then began molesting his now 14-year-old daughter and her 16-year-old friend after catching Charlene and the 16-year-old in bed together. He found Charlene unattractive now because she was not 100% dependent on him for sexual gratification. He withheld sex from Charlene and considered this his way to punish her. Charlene did not find this behavior odd and was in the apartment when it occurred.

Life of Crime

The couple began kidnapping and luring girls and women to their home on September 11, 1978. Rhonda Scheffler and Kippi Vaught were the first two victims. They both were bludgeoned with a tire iron then fatally shot in the head.

Gerland and Charlene confessed to murdering at least 10 teens and young women, however, were convicted of only four murders.

Gerald and Charlene’s horrific life of crime came to an end when a witness to an abduction wrote down the van’s license plate number and called police. They traced the van back to Gerald and Charlene.

Convictions & Sentencing

Charlene testified against Gerald in court in exchange for a lighter sentence of 16-years. She studied business and psychology while in prison, claiming she was also a victim. “There were victims who died, and there were victims who lived. It’s taken me a hell of a long time to realize that I’m one of the ones who lived,” Charlene said during an interview.

She further claims that she tried to “save some of their lives.” (Going out on a limb here to say calling 911 would’ve helped.) She was released from prison in 1997. (Sorry, after participating in sex games and assisting in 10 murders, the victim card is out the door with me.)

Gerald was sentenced to death but died of cancer in 2002 before the state carried out the sentence.
