Nico Lanes has always had life very hard. He grew up in the rough streets of East Harlem. While many kids all over the county had good role models to look up to, he was surrounded by drug dealers and gang bangers. It was almost inevitable that he would go down the wrong path.

When Nico was 13 years old his parents got a divorce because his mom had an affair. Nico remembers she was in the SUV about to leave; his dad made him get in front of the car to make sure she didn’t go, but she about ran him over and his dad didn’t do anything about it. Nico ran inside, tears falling down his face. His dad comes in saying, “See, she doesn’t give a shit about you,” when really he didn’t care about Nico either. She left the family to go live with her boyfriend, his dad left without saying a word where he was going, and his siblings are older than him so they just left because they were old enough to drive wherever they wanted to. Nico was home alone for weeks, cooking his own food, doing his own laundry. His mom finally came back and brought her boyfriend in to live with them too. Nico was pissed and that’s when he began to not care about anything. High school came around and he gave up on everyone and everything. He never came home because his parents didn’t care about him at all.

By the time Nico was 25 he had established himself as one of East Harlem's drug lords. Through the years, he had done many things that he wasn’t proud of. He had killed innocent people. He had encouraged his own siblings to join in the drug gang. At this point, there was no turning back. One time, Nico and four of his guys had to drive to a hotel in Miami Beach to make the deal with a group of Colombians and a guy named Hector. Two guys stay in the car; Nico tells them to wait and when it’s been 15 minutes, if they are still in there, they needed to go in and check on them. Nico and one of his guys come with him upstairs and walk in. The deal goes bad, a couple of Colombians come up from behind and handcuff Nico’s guy to a shower pole at gunpoint, threatening to kill them with a chainsaw if Nico does not reveal the location of the drug money. Nico refuses to talk, and Hector, who is the enforcer's leader, goes to the bedroom and brings the chainsaw out and begins to cuts Nico's guy as they force Nico to watch. Nico puts his head behind the shower curtain to cover his face from getting blood on him. Before Hector can do the same to Nico, just in time, Nico’s guys burst into the room shooting an SMG. Nico attacks the Colombian and takes his gun and kills all of them. Nico and his guys escape with the cocaine and the money.

As he got older he grew concerned about his life choices. His mother who has told him for years that she was ashamed of what he did was dying from cancer. As his mother lays in the hospital, looking pale and weak, ready to die, she asked him to please change his ways. With her dying wish, he agreed to try to pursue a career that wasn’t illegal. But he understood how difficult it would be to walk away from all the money and power. This is all he knew from the age of 15. He learned how to turn cocaine into crack while other kids were playing sports. He was using triple beams scales to weigh his drugs while other teens were working at the local store. Nico carried guns when others carried backpacks. It truly was a different world for him.

But this was her dying wish, so he was willing to make a change. Even though she treated him badly and didn’t care about him, it was his mom. He wanted to make her proud for once. He was so big in the drug dealing game that no one questioned him when he decided to stop. Many of his drug dealing employees were upset, but now the position of drug lord was up for grabs. He didn’t assign the position of drug lord to anyone when he left, so it caused an internal war amongst all the drug dealers now wanting to be the leader. Nico didn’t care because he was now focused on trying to work for a real company. He found a job working at Pops- Wheel, and Tire. There he used his sales skills to sell tires and services just like he sold drugs for years. He was happy that he didn’t have to earn money illegally. All he wanted to do now was to make his mom proud for once in his life. But after his first paycheck after working 50 hours was so little, he was upset. The temptation to go back was very strong.

He continued to work at Pops-Wheel and Tire for a couple months but since he left his drug organization in limbo many killings were occurring. There was no structure and no control; he was very concerned about how things were turning out. Seeing that he wasn’t making much money and seeing the chaos he caused from leaving, he decided to go back. As he tried to regroup and rebuild his drug empire, the rest of the drug dealers were not having it. Nico reached out to his best friend, Dimar, about what to do. They decided to organize a meeting with most of the drug dealers in the city. When everyone showed up, they confronted him and told him that he was no longer the leader and no longer respected him anymore for leaving. Things got heated and words got exchanged followed by bullets and death. Amongst the chaos, Dimar was shot in the head and killed. Nico was able to make an escape and got away.

The next day Nico decided it was just too dangerous and moved to Compton. He secretly began to try to start over again with new people and clients. He taught them how to turn cocaine into crack like when he was a kid. He got a better house and started to have a family. He got married to a girl who actually went to high school with him and moved to Compton as well. But even in Compton, he wasn’t able to run from his past—except for this time it was Dimar’s past that was the problem. Dimar was a thief, he always stole and usually stole from the wrong people. While at the mall, someone recognized Nico and confronted him about Dimar. Trying to defend his dead friend only turned into another heated confrontation. As they started pushing and shoving each other in the mall arcade, fists started to fly and Nico smasheD his head into the bright arcade game and left.

Later on, Nico was home alone watching TV. His dog Pee Wee started barking so he went outside to see what was going on. Nothing out of the norm, just an Asian guy walking down the street with his hood up. Nico went back in to relax and watch more TV but Pee Wee barks again. As Nico heads back to the door to check on Pee Wee he sees the Asian guy beginning to walk up the stairs. Moments later there was a gun pointed at Nico’s face and the Asian guy smiled. Nico slammed the metal front door on him and he stumbled back just enough for Nico to make it to his room, but the Asian guy was right behind him shooting. Nico gets to his room and grabs the shotgun that he had behind the door. There was no time to think, only time to react. As the guy opened the door Nico shot him twice in the chest. The Asian guy was in shock and tried to walk out the door, so Nico walked up behind him and shot him in the back of the head. The guy lay there dead. As Nico tried to gather his thoughts he knew that it was no coincidence that this guy was here. The only explanation was that the guy Nico beat up in the arcade had hired an assassin to kill him. But he underestimated Nico. By this point in his life, Nico has had a gun pulled on him six or seven times before. It was normal to him, it was part of how his life was.

As Nico goes and gets drunk from a rough week of someone trying to kill him, he was in the bar enjoying a few drinks, until a fight almost happened because Nico was so drunk he couldn’t control his anger. Nico left because he didn’t want to end up killing another guy. He walked out the bar and called one of his guys to take him home. He got home safely; his guy tried to help him but Nico refused help. He told the guy to leave him alone and so he did. Nico headed upstairs into his office and shut the doors. He walked to his desk and sat down; on his desk he snorted a mountain of cocaine, his wife came in and went crazy on him from all the drugs in the house and all situations that were going on and tried to kill Nico. She shots him in the leg but then an assassin hired to kill Nico came in through the window. The assassin shot Nico's wife by accident in an attempt to assassinate Nico. Quick on his feet, Nico managed to get to one of his guns and kills the assassin. Nico, now crazed and high from the drugs, is freaking out. Looking at security cameras he watches as all of his men are killed by the assassin's men invading his mansion. Nico grabs his grenade launcher and blasts through his doors and opens fire on the henchmen, killing dozens of them despite being heavily wounded himself by returning fire. He feels no pain due to the drugs and pushes forward into battle. He goes to the edge of the staircase and thinks he’s unstoppable until a long assassin sneaks up behind him and shoots him in the back with a shotgun. Nico falls over the rail and into his fountain, with his body floating and the water turning red. That was the end of Nico Lane.
