Prince Edward Maryland married his girlfriend in May 2004. The first year at their Lake Forest, CA, apartment was filled with ups and downs, like most relationships, although things soon took a turn for the worst.

Maryland Attacks Wife During Crack Binge

On Friday, April 8, 2005, Maryland and his wife drank alcohol, smoked crack cocaine, and had sex throughout the day and night into Saturday. By Sunday, Maryland had convinced himself that his wife had an affair with another man.

She never stepped out of her marriage, although Maryland repeatedly punched her in the face with his fists, convinced she would confess if he inflicted enough pain. She called out of work the next day- a Monday- as her eyes were black and her face swollen.

The same day, Maryland forced his wife to write him two checks totaling $3,300 and forced her to ride with him to Van Nuys to buy more crack cocaine. He forced her to withdraw $500 from an ATM while in Van Nuys.

Back at their apartment, Maryland and his wife smoked more crack cocaine while he continued accusing her of having an affair. He became angrier the more he yelled at his wife and listened as she denied having an affair. He punched and kicked her throughout the day and into Tuesday.

Four Days of Torture

By Tuesday evening, Maryland was in an out-of-control, cocaine-induced rage.  He decided he should punish his wife; hitting and kicking her was not enough, despite seeing her swollen, bruised face.

Maryland spent the next two days torturing his helpless wife. He hit her in the head, neck, and face with a wire coat hanger, dragged her naked around the house, and pulled out almost all of her hair. He cut the remaining hair off using scissors.

Maryland refused to allow her to use the bathroom and urinated in her mouth. He used a hot crack pipe to burn her arms, back, legs, and thighs and stuck the same pipe into her vagina. He tied his wife to a futon and promised he would make sure no other man ever wanted to be with her.

He forced her into the car on two occasions, driving back to Van Nuys to buy more crack. He held a knife to her throat and punched her with his forearm several times on the drive.

The woman attempted to escape during the second trip when Maryland stopped by a hotel to get a room. She ran when he walked into the office, but he chased her down and forced her back into the car. He then drove back to their apartment.

By Wednesday evening, Maryland had strangled his wife unconscious three times and threatened to kill her, her mother, and her son several times. He forced the knife he held to her throat inside her vagina, sodomized her, and forced her to perform oral sex on him.

He forced his wife to admit she had an affair, although untrue. He even forced her to beg him to kill her.

On Thursday, April 14, Maryland left the apartment while his wife lay on the floor unconscious. She woke up while he was gone and called 9-1-1.

Woman Transported to Hospital, Maryland Arrested

Paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital, where she spent six days receiving treatment for her injuries.

Her eyes were swollen shut, her tongue was swollen and lacerated, and she had burns on her scalp, labia, clitoris, and legs. Her body was black and blue. Her larynx was fractured, and her vocal cords were bleeding, requiring a tracheotomy. The surgery altered her voice. She underwent surgery to repair a damaged ear.

Kern County Sherriff’s deputies spotted Maryland in his vehicle traveling along the interstate later Thursday afternoon. After a 20-minute chase with speeds reaching 120 MPH, Marlynad lost control of his car, crashed, and was apprehended.

The victim was still badly scarred at Maryland’s trial.  Her memory of events was a bit foggy, although she remembered most of what happened to her.

Two of Maryland’s ex-girlfriends testified on her behalf, describing how the man inflicted similar acts of violence on them during their respective relationships.

The police officer who responded to the woman’s 9-1-1 call testified at Maryland’s trial about her condition:

“Her face was purple. . . . [O]ne of her eyes was red. The other one was swollen. Almost shut. Her ears were black. Her hair was—had looked like it had been cut off close to her scalp. I could see her scalp. . . . [S]he was grotesquely beaten.” A paramedic described V. as “horrendously beaten,” and her injuries as the worst he had seen on a surviving victim in his 14-year career.

Maryland represented himself during his trial.  He admitted causing most of the injuries to his wife but contended she was “disrespecting’ him by lying about an affair. He claimed that she was HIV positive and agreed to allow him to beat her if she lied to him during their relationship. He defended himself by saying it was part of their agreement.

Maryland was a habitual offender who had served time in prison on four separate occasions. He was sentenced to 144 years in prison. He is incarcerated at the Correctional Training Facility in Orange County and will be eligible for parole in 2028.

“It was heinous and horrific,” said Susan Schroeder, spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney’s office. “When the victim says that the rapes were a relief from the beatings, that kind of says it all. The only way our community can be safe is to have this guy in prison, and, thank God, this guy is in prison for the rest of his life.”
