The Boulder Police Department, located in Boulder, Colorado, responded Sunday to John Ramsey, father of JonBenet Ramsey regarding his requests to allow DNA testing to be done by an independent agency to help solve the 25-year-old case. On Saturday, Ramsey announced that he was going to start a petition asking the Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis for permission to allow an independent agency to test the DNA involved in the murder case of his daughter, JonBenet Ramsey instead of the Bolder Police Department.

Police Chief, Maris Herold said in a statement Sunday, “we have a shared goal to bring justice and hopefully some peace to JonBenet’s family and everyone who was impacted by her loss. Our investigation with federal, state, and local partners has never stopped. That includes new ways to use DNA technology. We’ve always used state-of-the-art technology as it has been at the forefront of this investigation. Every time the DNA technology changed, we worked to make sure the evidence could be tested”. Chief Herold continued to say that the murder investigation “has always been and will continue to be a priority for the Bolder Police Department”.

6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was reported missing to the Boulder Police Department on the morning of December 26, 1996, by her mother, Patsey Ramsey. Patsey had found a 2-and-a-half-page ransom note demanding 118,000 dollars in exchange for their 6-year-old daughter, JonBenet. Shortly after authorities arrived on the scene, JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey, found the body of his young daughter in the basement of their home. An autopsy was performed on the young child, revealing that JonBenet died by strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head. The Boulder, Colorado Medical Examiner said he found an 8 and ½ inch fracture on the skull of JonBenet. Unfortunately, Patsey Ramsey passed away after battling cancer before her daughter’s murder was solved. It’s been 25 years since JonBenet was found murdered and authorities have not arrested nor convicted any suspects in her murder.

The Boulder Colorado Police Department says it has received a whopping 21,016 tips in the JonBenet Ramsey case, including letters and emails and they’ve traveled to 19 separate states to interview what they say is more than a thousand people in connection with the child’s murder since 1996. The Boulder Police Department has also said they’ve been working with Federal, State, and local agencies involved in the case, meeting most recently in March of 2022.

JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey has criticized the Boulder Police Department for their “arrogancy, pride, ego and inexperience at the time his daughter was killed during his Saturday discussion”. John Ramsey went on to further state “we can’t let the murder of a child be left up to local police. They’re just big enough that they think they know everything, and they don’t. if the murder of a child becomes a federal offense, a case might be handled differently”. Ramsey’s petition is said to have gained 1,800 signatures as of Sunday evening.

The petition is asking the Governor to use his “power” to allow for independent DNA analysis. The petition said “you have the power. Given the lack of progress by the Boulder Police, we the undersigned petitioners ask you to move DNA decisions in this case away from the BPD to an independent agency so that JonBenet has a last chance at the justice she deserves”. A spokesperson for the Bolder Governor told CBS4 Denver that they “will review the petition and look into how the state can assist in using new technology to further investigate this cold case and to identify JonBenet Ramsey’s killer and bring him or her to justice”.

Hopefully, this is the push that’s needed to solve this case, bringing closure to a family that has been desperately seeking answers for more than 2 decades.
