Cricketers who can be in trouble for their past tweets/posts
3 England Players & 1 Ex-Cricketer from New Zealand can face issues
Ollie Robinson’s suspension from international cricket has certainly taken the England cricketers by storm. The pacer was punished after some of his old ‘racist and sexist’ tweets resurfaced on social media when he made his Test debut against New Zealand at the Lord’s.
Following the infamous episode, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has ordered an investigation to learn if any other England player had made any such derogatory remarks in the past. Alongside ECB, the guilty players can also face heat from their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.
It has been learned that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) duo Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum had allegedly insulted the Indian accent during a social media exchange in 2018. The current captain and head coach of KKR, alongside Jos Buttler, used the word ‘Sir’ to reputedly mock the Indian fans.
Although some of those tweets have been deleted, the screenshots of the comments are doing rounds of social media. Speaking on the matter, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said that the franchise would wait to learn about the conclusion. However, he also made it crystal clear that the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side has zero-tolerance for any type of discrimination.
1. Dom Bess
Dom Bess allegedly mocked India's National Anthem and MS Dhoni. As the England Cricket Board (ECB) has assured to investigate and take action against players for their offensive tweets, Dom Bess's old Instagram post mocking India's National Anthem has angered the netizens on social media. The picture shared by the social media users on Instagram is of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy when India toured England to participate in the global event. In the viral Dom Bess Instagram post, the off-spinner writes, 'one of the funniest national anthems'. India defeated England in the ICC Champions Trophy Final in 2013. Notably, as per the Daily Mail UK report which cited Wisden.com, another racist post has been unearthed, however, the identity of the player cannot be revealed as he was 15 when it was written.
Apart from this, another of Dom Bess's Instagram posts is being widely shared in which the off-spinner can be seen mocking Team India's former skipper MS Dhoni. Dom Bess's Instagram post shows that the off-spinner shares a photo of MS Dhoni choosing his bat from 5-6 bats- on this the off-spinner calls Dhoni 'Stupid'.
2. Eoin Morgan - Brendon Mccullum - Jos Buttler
They mocked Indian fans accent. During an exchange on social media in 2018, Kolkata Knight Riders and England limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan and England batter Jos Buttler used ‘Sir’ to mock Indian fans. The duo was then joined by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, who is the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.
Despite a star-studded squad, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have had a torrid first half of the IPL 2021, losing 5 out 7 matches, and languishing at the 7th place on the points table, just a couple of points above Sunrisers Hyderabad. Captain Eoin Morgan and coach Brendon McCullum have been criticized for some of the tactics in the field and with the batting order. Both the Kolkata Knight Riders and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have taken a strong stance against discrimination of any sort.
KKR has zero-tolerance for any sort of discrimination: Venky Mysore
“We don’t know enough about it to comment at this time. Let’s wait for the process to be completed to get all the facts before we jump to any conclusions. Just to reiterate, the Knight Riders organisation has ‘zero tolerance’ for any sort of discrimination,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore told Cricbuzz on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, many questionable social media posts of prominent players are doing rounds of the internet after Robinson’s suspension. An ECB spokesperson has said that there’s no place for discrimination in the sport, and the board won’t hesitate in making tough decisions.
