It was a 100-degree day in Mississippi on September 30, 2016, when patrol officer Cassie Barker left her three-year-old daughter locked inside her patrol car while she went to the home of her supervisor, Sgt. Clark Ladner, where the two had sex and enjoyed each other’s company for four hours.

It was just before 9 a.m. when Barker left the girl inside the patrol car. Her shift was almost over. Barker and the supervisor had been sexually involved with each other for many months already. It even caused the demise of Barker's marriage.

For four hours, Barker enjoyed adult time with her supervisor, unconcerned with the child she left inside the car. Barker left the air conditioner running, which she thought would be enough to keep the girl cool AND apparently, replace human supervision.

Unfortunately, Barker was in such a hurry to see her man, she did not turn the A/C settings to “cool.” Instead, the A/C was set in the middle, blowing warm air out inside the car on the already extremely hot day.

Cheyenne Unresponsive When Barker Returned

Cheyenne Hyer was unresponsive when Barker finally returned to her patrol car after spending four hours with her lover while on -duty. Barker rushed the girl to the hospital but it was too late. The girl was dead.

Medical experts said Cheyenne’s body temperature reached 107 degrees and that she died from heatstroke.

Barker and Sgt. Ladner was fired from the force immediately after Cheyenne’s death.

Cheyenne’s father, Ryan, had not seen the girl for several months prior to her death. However, he told People magazine that he trusted Barker was caring for her appropriately. The two separated a year prior when Ryan found out his wife was having an affair with her supervisor.

Not an Isolated Incident

In April 2015, Barker had left the child unattended in a vehicle while she went into a store. A passerby saw the child inside the car and called police. Gulfport child welfare workers temporarily removed the child from Barker’s care and she was suspended from the department for one week.

Pregnant Barker Pleads Guilty

A five-months-pregnant Barker pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in court in March 2019. She said in court that she took full responsibility for the death of her child, but continued a pity party by saying that it was hard taking care of her daughter without help, a sad attempt to take some of the blame off her shoulders and blame Ryan for her actions.

Pathetic.

Meanwhile, Ryan Hyer filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Mississippi Department of Children’s Services. He claims this incident could’ve been prevented.

Barker Sentenced in Cheyenne Hyer Death

A judge sentenced the former patrol officer to 20-years in prison for her daughter’s death. During sentencing, the judge told her: “I don’t know what I could ever do to you that could be worse than what you’ve already experienced… You will forever be entombed in a prison of your own mind.”

The officer said she planned to place the baby up for adoption. The Mississippi Bureau of Prisons received some backlash when Barker announced her adoption plans. A spokesperson for the prison system said pregnant inmates have the option to place their child with whomever they choose and are not involved in their decision.

The supervisor whom Barker cared about more than her child on that fateful September day is not the father of the child, Barker said.
