Kim King-Macon stopped her vehicle at a stop sign when a black Chevrolet Impala pulled up behind her. En route to the shopping mall to meet family at JC Penney, King-Macon traveled with her 3-year-old grandson, Acen King, in the backseat of the car.
The intersection was busy and King-Macon waited for other cars to turn. The driver of the Impala began honking his horn at her, a sign he was impatiently waiting for her to turn. King-Macon honked her car horn back at the Impala and waited for other cars to turn.
Impala Driver Fires Gun
Suddenly, the driver of the Impala gets out of his vehicle, walked toward her car brandishing a handgun, and fired one shot. King-Macon did not realize that bullet struck her vehicle and her grandson. She thought the man fired into the air. She continued driving the car, seeing the hole in her car after arriving at the mall about 10-minutes later.
When she got out of the car, she saw Acen slumped over in his car seat clinging to life.
She immediately dialed 911. Paramedics attempted CPR on Acen and rushed him to a local hospital where he later died.
“He was a unique child so God called a major angel home,” says Acen’s grandmother Kim King-Macon to Fox16.
Police attempted to identify the driver of the car who shot Acen. The man, Gary Eugene Holmes, turned himself in to police shortly before Acen’s funeral.
The grandmother of seven has struggled with Acen’s death knowing it happened in her car.
“Not to know your grandchild had been shot and you drive that far with him. I think I beat myself up because I feel like had I known, I could’ve got him to the hospital and maybe save him,” says King-Macon.
Holmes was convicted of first-degree murder and making terroristic threats. He was sentenced to 50-years in prison without the possibility of parole.
