We are often told to wear our SPF every day but this can leave us confused especially if, like me, you live in a country that is famous for its crappy weather.

So what’s the low-down on SPF, why should we wear it every day? What if I have acne?

A bit about Ultraviolet Rays

Let's quickly look at some of the terminology and what it means

UV radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy.

Healthline’s breakdown of the different UV rays

The reason you need to wear sunscreen every day is that UV rays are always present, whether it's sunny, cloudy or a snowstorm, your skin can still fall victim to ultraviolet ‘sun’ damage or even skin cancer.

Types of SPF

Now it can be confusing when it comes to the different types of Sunscreens.

There are two main types:

Chemical — Ingredients often include avobenzone and homosalate. They work by absorbing UV rays in turn protecting your skin.

The formula is often thinner in turn won’t leave a white-cast for deeper skin tones although it may take 20 minutes to protect after application.

Mineral/Physical — Ingredients often include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It was said they work by creating a barrier to reflect UV rays in turn protecting your skin but studies have shown both minerals and chemicals absorb UV rays.

The formula is often thicker. The advantage is you get instant protection after application.

Products

As someone blessed with combo sensitive acne-prone skin it has taken me years to find products that work and don’t break me out. Here are some of my top SPFs. I do not reply on moisturisers or make up for my SPF so these are products that hold the sole purpose of sun protection…

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultralight Invisible Fluid SPF50+

High protection for sensitive skin, this French pharmacy product is a cult favourite. It’s a mineral SPF with sand, sweat and water-resistant powers. It’s lightweight and easy to use. This is my go-to as it’s accessible in UK and EU, a great SPF for all.

Kao Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen SPF50+

A chemical SPF, Biore’s Watery Essence is my go-to for beach holidays. It’s super lightweight like an essence it absorbs into the skin in seconds without a trace. It feels hydrating and I’ve never had any issues with clogged pores or breakouts.

My only issue with this SPF is it’s not easy to find at a reasonable price here in the UK. This is perfect for those with sensitive acne-prone skin.

ISEHAN Kiss Me Mommy UV Mild Gel SPF 33

A lightweight cream, this SPF 33 is in the cutest packaging ever! A chemical sunscreen, it includes raspberry fruit extract as an antioxidant and aloe for soothing.

It’s alcohol, fragrance and essential oil-free making it another perfect SPF for us sensitive skinned folk.

Coola Classic Face Sunscreen SPF 50

No Excuses: Wear an SPF Everyday

Dedicated to making quality Sunscreens, Coola’s performance-driven ingredients aim to be 70% certified organic. Packed with beautiful seed oils, this gluten-free, cruelty-free formula comes in a recyclable tube.

They have a range of products that come in spray form, setting sprays or even drops. I also love that you have the option of different flavours such as cucumber or pina colada.
