Welcome to the Lyrical Breakdown series by singer-songwriter King Roach, exclusively on Vocal Media.

This song is a conversation between the devil and a man; a man who promised his soul away, and in return was given the things he asked for. The all-too familiar tale of meeting at the crossroads of life, and the aftermath of signing your name in blood. The lyrics begin the dialogue, where the entity reminds the mortal that the journey is far from over.

"We did what we said we would do, but there's so much left for you now that you're near, now that you're here".

The demon quickly reminds the man that this is, in fact, his reality.

"But don't forget what you said to me. We know what it was meant to be."

It softens it's tone while acknowledging that the man has wavered back and forth on the weight of that decision he made long ago, but nevertheless welcomes him back with open arms.

"... and since you've returned, it's been the world in the palm of your hands, but that was the plan".

In its dark demeanor, the beast gently gives a stern reminder:

"now that you're near, now that you're here, you're mine".

The song now switches it's tone. The devil, whether factual or metaphoric, is now silent. Upon taking in the gravity of what was said, the mortal, now truly aware of his reality, responds.

"I can't forget what I said to you. I think about it all the time and it conquers my mind."

With clarity as to the purpose of his hardships, he shows humility and gratitude for the worst that has happened to him; a position that few ever evolve to obtain. Thinking back to those dark moments, while understanding that only hindsight is 20/20, the man asks a profound question that remains rhetorical.

"How could you blame me for the shame that I've endured to get where I am?".

His final declaration: whether the life of fame and fortune that he destined himself for awaits, or whether the decision he made on that faithful night, and the resulting journey, will be his detriment, he screams the bravest of notions in knowing that whatever comes, he is prepared for the journey.

"I'm not unsure I want to see the light."

Final Thoughts: I'm a firm believer that I'm just a vessel for something bigger than myself. This was definitely one of those songs that wrote itself. Growing up, I gravitated towards Nirvana so much because of how simple their songs were to play. It made me feel connected to them, as many other guitarists have felt in the beginning of their careers. The fact that this entire song is two chords, and my finger placement is 98% stationary, is a testament to how I've grown as a songwriter. Less is more, and I hope to continue to hear stories of the goosebumps that YOU got when listening to this little ol' song I wrote.
