After The Goldrush

I have a pile of 500 or so CDs for sale on Discogs because I will probably never play again. This does not necessarily mean they are bad or I don’t like them, it just means that I won’t play them again and they may as well go to someone who wants them. Although I have vinyl I don’t sell any because I know that some may stick or jump and then things get awkward.

Anyway, I do have a CD player and digital radio and that means I can pick up my sale CDs and give them a listen, which means I am 100% certain they are fit for sale, although I check them physically for any scratches, scuffs or marks. What sometimes happens is that I listen to the sale album and then realise that it is so good that I need to keep it.

Recently I got a question about my Velvet Underground “Peel Slowly And See” box which should have a peelable plastic banana skin cover, which made me realise my box was imperfect, so I took it off Discogs and kept it, but the music is good so that is all fine.

So here are a few that were on sale then got recalled.

Patti Smith - Banga

This is in a long format book case and it is Patti Smith who is an amazing poet who I have loved since hearing “Piss Factory” and have a lot of her albums. but “Banga” just say and I am not sure I had even listened to it, maybe just once. Maybe a month ago I started playing and much of the lyrics are read over the music, but the opening two songs “Amerigo” and “April Fool” are immediately worth the price of admission, The quality never stops before culminating in a beautiful update of Neil Young’s “After The Gold Rush” followed by “Just Kids” a bonus addition to the disc.

Emperors of Wyoming

This I picked up when working at Oxfam in Jesmond and bought it because of the arcane Americana cover, and just the name of the band. The cover photographs are very Old West and not romantically so, and the music doesn’t disappoint. This may not be The Band but it is definitely essential Americana and ever since the wonderful opener “The Bittersweet Sound of Goodbye” rehit the player that was back on my play pile and is getting a lot of plays while I work.

Moulettes - Preternatural

I don’t know where or why I bought this, it may have been recommended by Marek and RPM but I cannot be sure of that. I really don’t know how to describe this album but the sound is monstrous and the whole album is on YouTube. Again I must really not have played it or it would never have got put on sale. The sounds are familiar but wrong but is an immensely listenable monster sound. Another album that I will never get sick of. You can’t really dance to it and the melodies are immensely complex. Maybe the nearest touchstone to this is something by Janelle Monae but this is not soul or dance but does an amazingly innovative sound.

So that is a trio of albums that I will never sell. The thing is if it wasn’t for th COVID lockdowns sending me to work from home these albumes may have ended up being sold and I would have actually missed these impossibly amazing sounds.

Sometimes music (books , films , TV , plays and more importantly people) need time for you to fully appreciate what they really are, adn most of the time people think they do not have that time to give, but if you do you may find some incredible treasures. I certainly have.
