The Space Between Your Ears and Your Hands
I was playing the softest open roll I possibly could. Against the metronome of my mind I am playing quintuplets; lost inside the rattling of the springs beneath a snare drum, counting the shakes that subdivide each pulse in my hands. The notes move rapidly, but I can feel the silence between all of them.
TJ GhinderPublished 3 years ago in BeatSigns A Band Is Over
Everyone has their favourite bands. Some change all the time whilst others become long-term favourites. When I was younger, my favourites flatuated between Spice Girls, Sugababes, Atomic Kitten, Kaiser Chiefs and Busted. As I got older my tastes have changed and I have firm favourites like Depeche Mode and Nightwish. A lot of bands that I have loved have now split up. Sometimes it is hard, but necessary if there is tension between band members or if they want to go their own separate ways and do their own thing.
Chloe GilholyPublished 3 years ago in Beat5 Romantic LGBTQ Wedding Songs
There is nothing wrong with "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran or "So High" by John Legend as your wedding day song. In fact, though very popular as wedding songs they remain undoubtedly very beautiful songs to express one's love with. That being said, sometimes as LGBTQ people it would be nice to have romantic songs written for our types of relationships by artists that understand our struggles.

I have no doubt the greatest musician of all time toiled in obscurity on some plantation, the last note of her life crackling from her lungs under the boiling Deep South sun.
Keita ErskinePublished 3 years ago in Beat"The Importance of Music in Our Society"
Art and music are basic human functions. Humankind and art cannot function without one another. We have the burning desire to create, whatever it may be and however tiny or grand. The interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, the emotional response, performing, or creating. This is no different for classical music or contemporary concert music. Both musics have immense worth for our society; however, the problem we all know in this field is that this music is little known and hence underappreciated. As a musician and artist it is my responsibility that others can learn to enjoy the art for which I have utter passion.

Long Island. It felt like magic to be back. Thick, fresh, morning air filled my lungs and lifted my spirit. Home. The promise of Saturday loomed as the sun climbed in the sky. An electric current coursed through my body as I got into the car with my husband. He understood the significance of this trip. The “History of Me” tour I dreamed of for years. Finally, he could experience the places that I held in such high esteem, the places that haunted me.

I type this in a room, alone. It’s the same room I’ve spent the majority of the last year in. This is okay. It’s a pleasant room. I have it just how I like it. It has plenty to keep me occupied within. It lets the light stream in on sunny days like today. This is my pandemic space. I often count my blessings that I have it. That I can maintain it. It’s here the days stretch out and sometimes they take me places, places within. Sometimes it closes in on me, it presses the sides of my cranium and I struggle to see through the dullest of aches…..
Nico VersluysPublished 3 years ago in BeatThe Angels of Hell, Michigan
The Angels of Hell, Michigan by AP West It was a cold November Wednesday evening in 1998 when Serendipity unpacked her guitar and flute from the trunk of her car. She headed into The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan for its local band night. This was a national rock venue and she was a young woman in a new city trying to prove herself and trying to network with the local bands.

Shannon KingPublished 3 years ago in BeatTransformative Trajectories 2: "BlueSky" Ideas to create new horizons for women in the music industry.
What would this new transformative trajectory look like for women in music? What are the practical solutions to creating the means to succeed for women who have a more complex and sometimes scattered work/life pattern than men?

“I never really stick to one theme in my music,” says Kory Burns from his home in Palm Beach, Florida. “I have songs about love, religion, my parents… I just go off of whatever I’m going through in the moment.”
