Vrain clamped down on his control. Removing the scope from Shane’s chest, Vrain stepped back. Shane slowly sat up, his eyes locked on Vrain. Feeling his recovering heart begin to race again, Shane reached towards Vrain. Vrain forced himself to step back as Shane glanced around the room. “What is the security in this room?”
Hearing the door to his office open, Vrain turned to see Shane. Fearing he’d lost track of time and missed their next research session, Vrain immediately glanced at the clock then back at Shane “you’re over an hour early.” Sinking back into his chair, Vrain took a few slow deep breaths. It was bad enough he was already on edge about his next research session.
Shane's breathing was loud, not nearly as loud as his pounding heart. Vrain's gaze moved to the EKG monitor as Shane's heart rate continued to increase. A fast drum in Vrain's ears. Shane's heart was perfectly steady, as always. Vrain wanted to hear Shane's heart skip, just once. To feel the powerful muscle shudder under his palm was a dream that Vrain desperately wanted to come true.
Vrain didn’t feel like he was able to breathe until after Shane had left. Even then, it was still difficult, enough so that Vrain sat in the ultrasound techs chair. Looking up, Vrain watched Margo race into the room. Concern filled her face. Vrain instantly knew that she’d seen everything from the comfort of his office.
Hearing his phone ping, Vrain looked up to see Margo had texted. Reading the text a few more times, Vrain's heart stilled. Nervousness mixed with excitement soared through him. Shane was back already for more testing. Margo had already gone ahead and had him burn off a chunk of his energy. He was in room four.
Vrain looked over his shoulder as the sound of clicking caught his attention. Meeting Damion's gaze, he gave Vrain a forced smile as he made his way into the room. "I had an incident at work yesterday, and now I'm out for the next six to eight weeks." Vrain looked at Damion's casted leg. Mouth working, Vrain couldn't get his voice to work.
Glancing up from his endless paperwork, Vrain swore when he saw the clock. Shane’s stress test had started ten minutes ago. There was no time for Vrain to get to the room and participate. Clenching his fist, Vrain sighed when he saw the monitor with three separate EKGs running across it.
Vrain leaped to his feet as the impatient knocking started up again. Getting to the door in record time, Vrain paused when he saw who was on the other side. “Darren. What has you encroaching on my office today?”
