Hi. My name is Uniqua. Back when I was 18 years old, I joined a dating website that all of my friends said was amazing. On the website, you were able to click an "X" on a person if you didn't think you'd be compatible together based on their profile information, or you could click a check mark if you thought there was a chance you would be compatible. The guys I clicked a check mark on would get a notification that I was interested. Ding! A message popped up on my screen. Javaughn introduced himself. He was my age and lived in a town 30 minutes away from me. For the next month, we talked on the phone and texted nonstop. I used to snuggle up with a blanket at night and pretend it was him when we talked on the phone. He was SO sweet. I decided to tell one of my closest friends about Javaughn. I showed her his picture, and she exclaimed, "Girl! He doesn't look 18! He looks younger! You better leave him alone before you end up in jail for dating a minor!!" Just the THOUGHT of jail scared me, so I acted without thinking. I blocked him and deleted my entire online profile. I didn't even ask to see proof that he was indeed 18.
So, I live in southern Mississippi, and it feels like every other place I stop, there's a homeless person sitting outside. When I was 18 years old (I'm now 25), I went to a waffle house to order a philly cheese steak sandwich to go (yum!). A guy who appeared to be homeless was stopping table by table, begging everyone in the restaurant for money. He was slowly making his way to me. As a young lady, I was mostly worried about my safety. I noticed that the guy would lean really close to whoever he was talking to, and that made me nervous. When he reached me, I told him that I didn't have anything as I moved away from him. Once I got my to go order and was getting up to leave, I couldn't stop thinking about the guy. I spotted him pacing outside of the waffle house. I remember it like it was yesterday. He was in a long black shirt with blue jeans that looked way too big for him. He appeared to be in his late 40's. I walked up to him and handed him $5. He was so happy, he told me why he needed the money. He said that he has a wife whose stomach was hurting. She needed some medicine but he didn't have a dollar to his name.He was begging for money to stop his wife's pain! How selfless! My heart really hurt for this guy.
