Save One Bullet
After my husband, Tom, went berserk on me, I couldn't wait to pack my shit up and get out of that house. Returning for the last load of belongings, which now would include every stitch of décor that wasn’t nailed down, I saw a familiar vehicle in the driveway. Shit. Marcia. What was she doing here?

The Funeral Chapter 30 Since I was the first to arrive, I wanted to check out how Mom looked in peace and quiet. Whoops, wrong Mom. This woman could have been Mom if she had been a little younger and less round. Her hair and face were similar enough. I got a silly thought as I glanced at the name tag over the viewing room, ‘Mrs. Ethel Howard’

Chapter 25 Tom had just laid out his financial plans for us after my mother's death. He'd taken out an enormous insurance policy on her and was planning on living high on the hog with it. I was stunned and incensed by his opportunistic greed and let him know.

Chapter 27 I stopped in the food court at the mall and sat by the windows facing the lake. Mom used to love coming here to watch the eagles in the Winter. For her, I took a few pictures of eagles diving for fish in Onondaga Lake. It was something we enjoyed doing together until she became unable to catch her breath while walking. I had to face it. When Mom died, I lost my only real friend.

Double Entrée or Something
Chapter 18 I was so finished with Tom. Lying to my face about loving me and always being there for me. I could barely stand to look at him. After he left the house I got up the courage to call Rick for comfort. He rushed to my side and "comforted" me all afternoon at "our" hotel until I could barely walk. We took a break and went to dinner at a fancy restaurant in a nearby town.

Chapter 13 My first official date with Rick was interrupted by a call from Mom's nursing home. She had fallen and fractured her pelvis. An ambulance was bringing her to a nearby hospital. Rick wouldn't allow me to drive after three rum and cokes. Instead, he drove and decided to sit and wait with me to keep me company. He got his opportunity to be the knight in shining armor for me that evening and it was a refreshing change for me, who always had to deal with these things alone.

The Circus
Blue lines on a white page, I can still see the words in my mind's eye. My fifth-grade English assignment was to write about anything we thought was fun. It had to be, oh horrors, two whole pages long! All weekend I puzzled over this assignment like my life depended on it, trying to come up with ideas. Not able to put it off any longer, on Sunday afternoon I settled in for a session of torture at the kitchen table. With pen in hand, a pack of three-hole notebook paper in front of me, and a dictionary, I began. After writing first page after first page, then crumbling the paper up into balls that I tossed across the kitchen into the trash can, some successfully, some not so much, I finally settled upon the topic, the Circus.

Save One Bullet
During my trip to the mall, I intended to buy myself the works, cut, color, nails, pedicure and finish off the day with a week’s worth of brand-new clothes. It was early enough in the day at the salon they had plenty of openings. After telling the stylist what I wanted she began mixing up a magic potion in a little ceramic cup and snapped on gloves like she was preparing to do a prostate exam. Wait. I don’t have one of those.
