Taru Anniina Liikanen
Finnish by birth, porteña at heart. Relationships, politics, bad puns, popular and unpopular opinions.
Men Don’t Believe Us
To make my point, let’s start with a little story from my morning commute. My workplace is in the city, but in such a hard-to-reach spot that we’re provided transport to the office from the city center. Since there’s no bus or train to make it there, everyone who works in the building either gets there in their own car or by minibus from the city center.
Am I Cold, or Are You Just Codependent?
After 15 years of living abroad, a lot of people assume I’m a cold person, and they have no problem saying it out loud. Especially when the topic of family comes up.
My Teacher Was a Murderer
In 2015, I decided to get an MA in Journalism. I got into an amazing program organized by a local university together with the most prestigious newspaper in Argentina. The intensive program lasted a year and consisted of traditional classes on general topics, from history to legal protections for journalists, as well as practical classes, with writing and weekly critiques.
I Was the Other Woman, and It Was (Almost) Exactly What You’d Expect
Have you ever noticed you were a cliché? For me, it was when I was having an affair with a married man. He was much older than me, married with three kids. A charismatic, powerful man who knew exactly what to say to make people do exactly what he wanted.
Patriarchy On Your Plate
About ten years ago (before I went vegan) I was visiting Finland with my Argentinian ex-boyfriend when my grandmother decided to take us out for dinner to my hometown's best steak restaurant.
Why Maradona Is God , And Messi Isn't
Somewhere around 2013, I was at the gym, finishing my workout on the treadmill, when I glanced at the door and saw a short, chubby man walk in the door, followed by a bleach-blond woman 30 years younger and a personal trainer three times his size. His attitude was that of someone who owned not just the gym, but the whole city.
My Friends Think I’m Petty
My small group of friends fell apart on June 7th, 2021, when we got infected with COVID-19. Why we fell apart wasn’t because of health, though. We were lucky. Nobody died, ended up in the hospital, or got long COVID. We’ve all gone back to our normal lives, jobs and hobbies, even working out.
I’ve Always Liked Being Catcalled
Before you head to the comments and tell me there’s something wrong with me for liking it when I’m objectified and harassed: I already know. I wouldn’t be writing this if there wasn’t. Hell, I probably wouldn’t be a writer if there wasn’t something wrong with me, period.
