Growing up I had many visions of what I wanted to be when I grew up. At times I was relentless on becoming a Power Ranger or a writer. After twenty-nine years, the path that seems most obtainable is becoming a writer.
As I stood in my wedding dress and my makeup artist touched up my lips, I heard my wedding party cheering. Did Taylor Swift accept my invitation and just show up? No. Yet, much like Swift herself, something did drop from the heavens above. I opened the window and called out, “What is that!?!” All at once, the group made their way inside and up the stairs to me.
In Love, Out of Love
August It was my best friend’s birthday party where I first met you. She rented a beach out and the chilly August breeze led me to seek shelter inside. That was when I found you. Your baby blue eyes twinkled as you too were seeking warmth.
The Most Oz-Some Land of All
Before there was a world that included land(s) from Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, or Game of Thornes, there was the magical land of Oz. A colorful world filled with many diverse characters and friends to collect along the ICONIC Yellow Brick Road. I would gladly slap on some ruby reds and travel to Oz over any other fantasy land and you should too!
A story about a gay man and how his high school drama teacher showed kindness is nothing ground breaking. Nevertheless, this story (my story) should be told and what better way then on this platform? This small act of kindness has stuck with me for over ten years. Before I jump right into the heartfelt gesture, I shall provide a back story (cue the sappy violin instrumental).
The Owl Card
Heather’s boss started to scream at her and the rest of the coworkers on her team. “This is NOT what I wanted people! Start over...NOW!” With that George Ashburn stormed out of the conference room. The team of four sat in silence until Anne spoke up, “He can not keep treating us this way.” Tears started to swell up in Heather's eyes but she refrained. Jake and Lauren started to agree with Anne and all three began to become heated. Heather finally spoke, “It’s not like we can do anything. Ashburn has been like this for the last four years that I’ve worked here.” Jake stood up and told them he was going to HR. Lauren laughed, “Good luck! Remember Robert Sims? He went to HR last fall and nothing was done. Then, the week of Christmas, Ashburn gave him the boot!” Anne rolled her eyes and then asked the group if they should get drinks after work. Everyone agreed.
A Trip to Story Island
When I want to escape the world for a bit, I turn to books. Reading allows me to drift into another place with a different story. Yeah, I know that sounds so corny and nerdy, but it is my thing. I also, love writing, so again this provides me with an escape. I have spent some time perfecting my bookcase to fit not only my reading needs but my reading mood. I truly feel like I could split the bookcase up into sections and each would represent a different land. So. let us explore those lands, no ticket is needed.
The Best Has Yet to Come in the Year 2021
Good Day Steven, HAPPY NEW YEAR! You did it! You survived the dumpster fire that was 2020. From toilet paper shortages to losing family members, you survived. Now, I know you are nervous about what 2021 has in store for you. Even so, let us go into this new year with so much positivity, that it can not help but to infect those around us. I know you have some big goals in mind for this year so, let us get down to it.
As I lay me down to sleep, I hope you come visit me. Gone too quick, I was 16. Taken from you was discovering the person I’ve come to be. It isn't fair, but still, I share my memories of you. Thinking of all the laughs we shared has helped me make it through. Never forget I miss you, but you come to me in my dreams. For that, I can't help but sing:
