As a matter of principle, I want to take time to do what is really important today. I've already made it to all the family gatherings "on time" and with food in hand. I've gotten most of the dishes done, laundry started back up, all the kids in the bed, and my husband is expectantly watching the Predators game. So, I thought I would take a moment to take a deep breath and reflect. What am I thankful for?
The end to another fast, fun-filled day in the Horton home. After my mentoring group left this afternoon, the kids and I enjoyed lunch together and then I began reading a book one of my mentors gave me. It's amazing how similar our tastes in literature are! I started out thinking......"well, I'll read while the kids are napping, maybe fall asleep".....having no idea once I started this book I would be captivated for hours! I read nearly 100 pages, through the 10th chapter and can't wait to head to bed and read more. I used to hate reading. I mean really hate reading. But when I was in school I realized that I had to embrace reading purposely so that I could legitimately define my own voice. Who I am, what I believe, what makes me unique, my passions, my fears, my desires......they've all been refined through reading, understanding, and that amazing thing called "discovery" that happens when you are challenged by a good book! Well....Mrs. Susan. Quaker Summer is just the book I needed today. And I'm so "engaged" in the author's journey......this is just what I needed to jump start my brain again! I had grown complacent to only know what I had previously known....now my appetite is back!
Does God get a vote?
In keeping with an election season, there seems to be TV coverage at every turn, the "buzz" among us, and so many homemade T-shirts, signs, and bumper stickers that you can't keep up! One lady's shirt said "Just Say No To _________" listing every candidate except the one she was backing! Ha! Wouldn't it have been much easier to just say "Vote for ______"? It's funny what our voting convictions can encourage us to do or not do. And everyone is in a panic if "he", or "she", get's into office. I know you've heard it too.
Have you ever recognized how easily you "jump" on a subject, person, or bandwagon? It can be either in agreement or disagreement. While other times you are slower to comment, taking time to correctly discern and choose more carefully your actions, words, or responses? Where does this "secret aggression" come from? What makes us just lose it at times? Or what makes us so passionate about something that it's not possible that those on the other side of the fence to have any good standing whatsoever? What makes us feel quite so Righteous, that we actually display Ungodliness?? Seems like an oxymoron!
As most of you reading already know, I'm not the spontaneous type! But this week, I surprised myself! Aaron and I had been given a gift certificate last Christmas to the Byrns-Roberts Inn in Murfreesboro, TN for a one-night stay. I started thinking about Christmas gifts last week, and I was reminded of my gift certificate so neatly posted to the office cork board. I thought, "Hum, I wonder if there is an expiration date?". When I called, the inn keeper said "No, there's no expiration date; however, we're retiring in March." I replied, "Oh, I wish I had of known, but do you happen to have anything open this weekend?". And to that, "Yes, our Garden Regency suite is open on Friday". "Perfect", I said, "Let's go ahead with the reservation". I called Aaron, called his mom, we got all the details worked out within just a few minutes. This weekend was a perfect time to go. It was Aaron's birthday weekend and it's just before all of the Christmas festivities begin around here! So we headed out of town on Friday afternoon for some much needed R & R.
