My Exquisite Sensitivity, Unpathologized
It’s crazy the power a few letters can have over the human psyche. Growing up I was told without (but also at times with) intended condescension that I was oversensitive. It seemed to me that what they were really saying was that emotions are often ill-timed and inconvenient.

Growing up I heard watered-down tribal tales that said we weren’t meant to settle here. The wind, that was why. It picks up speed as it surfs down the east side of the Rockies and gets another kick as it whips through the coulees. The wind is a mighty force. It will carry you away if you aren’t ready for it.

Into the Wrong Hands
The terse rhythm of my fingers tapping against the keyboard gained a friend when the rusted van pulled up to the drive-thru window. My eyes had returned to the computer screen before my brain processed what I saw. Behind the lit cigarette was a woman with long greyed hair tied back at the nape of her neck. Her skin looked splotchy and aged. Her neck hung noticeably.
