Why I Still do Yoga.
As I sit on my back deck, the sunshine beating down on my face, I say my final "Namaste," my hands in prayer position. I bring them up to my third eye, touching my forehead and bending down to the ground, grateful for the time I had to come to my mat this morning. Nothing is more energizing to me than doing sun salutations to the actual sun. Not hiding away indoors, like I need to during the chilling Canadian winters. I feel grounded, energized and ready to kick this day's ass. Having practiced yoga for 14 years, I now consider myself a 'yogi', but let's just say my journey to yoga was a rocky one, I hit a few speedbumps along the way.

Why I'm Proud to be Canadian
There is so much I love about Canada, so much I appreciate about being raised here, about living here my whole life. Growing up, I was exposed to different cultures, races, and religions. I was taught to appreciate and respect each one of them for their beauty, diversity and what they had to teach us as a cohesive group of people. I am so grateful to have been brought up in such a tolerant country. Yes I use the word tolerant, even accepting, of the many differences that exist between groups of people. As we look at our history and recognize the ugly things that happened there, we need to learn from our mistakes and repair damages done, while also remembering how great our country truly is. Let's stop comparing ourselves and our country to some non-existent standard of perfection and recognize that, relative to most of the countries on this planet, Canada has done an incredible job of unifying a diverse population around a progressive set of values. Values that were lacking in parts of our history and continue to be found lacking in most of the world today. Some of these points have been discussed in my social media posts, but their importance is worth reiterating (Instagram: @unpopularthoughtscanada) . Here are some of the reasons why I am proud to be Canadian:

Naive Hope
“Oh, Baby, the Places You’ll Go!” A story I’ve been reading to my daughter every night since I first found out I was pregnant. A book, chosen at random, because I liked the picture on the front and Dr. Seuss stories were nostalgic for me. A book about all the magic and challenges life may bring. As I read each word, I pour all of my hopes and dreams into this little girl, imagining the amazing life ahead of her. Desperately creating a connection with her, wanting her to know my voice when she is born. I read it so often I memorise the words on each page, eventually reciting it to her from start to finish anytime I feel the anxiety creep into my body, worrying about my little one as each day passes. No one ever told me how hard pregnancy would be, how it would kick your anxiety into overdrive, how the stress of work would spill into your thoughts as a mother, as you navigate how to be a mom, because for you it started the moment you found out you were pregnant.

The Loss of a Heart-Shaped Locket
It’s here, it has been here for a while now, the clash of races. A war to end all wars. We knew it was coming, we could sense it. The tension as you walked out your front door, the looks you got, the atmosphere, so thick with rage and fear you could cut it with a knife. Why didn’t we say something sooner? Why didn’t we do more? Surely anything would have been better than ending up where we are now, but I guess it's too late for all of that.
