Somers Beats Byram Hills on Both Ends of the Court
On Thursday January 11, Somers traveled to Byram Hills, and one thing really stuck out. The hulking frame of Bobcat center Zachery Efobi could not be missed, and the Tuskers certainly knew the tall order coming in. “A big kid, with big strong moves, we had to double him in the post,” said Andrew Violante. “That’s what we did and it worked.” But the Tuskers also had to play on the other end, and Violante led the way their too.

John Jay Falls 61-39 to Yorktown
After facing a pretty tall and wide order in Byram’s Hills Zachery Efobi, John Jay faced Yorktown at home on Wednesday January 10, and the good news was that the Huskers weren’t nearly as hulking. But they were still pretty tall and pretty quick, and the combination again proved too much for the Wolves.

John Jay Can't Contain Height and Might of Byram Hills
On Friday January 5, John Jay traveled to Byram Hills, and it didn’t take long for the Wolves to see what they were up against. Christopher Amenedo penetrated into the paint, dished to Zachery Efobi in the low post and he threw down a two handed dunk. Their hands obviously full, John Jay did manage to contain the big man in the first half but keeping the Bobcat from breaking out was another matter.

Spock’s Brain - Does it Really Deserve all the Hate?
Photo by Gage Skidmore Back in the mid 80s, long before I knew how reviled Spock’s Brain was, the episode did have a place in my heart. In college, there were times at parties that the girls would be on one side of the room, and guys were on the other. So I had the perfect allusion for my buddies, and a kicker from the episode really filled the bill for our desperation.

Somers Takes Second Place in the Eric D'Agnese Memorial Somers Tournament
On Saturday January 6, the wrestling team hosted the Eric D'Agnese Memorial Somers Tournament, and when the day ended, the Tuskers definitely scored some hardware. The result was a second place finish, and the gold began at 116 pounds.

John Jay Bowlers Are Rolling Again
https://richmonetti.smugmug.com/JJBoysBBvNS/i-DPGLDcR/buy On Thursday January 4, the bowling teams went to Cortland Lanes for matches against Hen Hud and Briarcliff. Unfortunately, the girls hit choppy seas versus the first place Sailors and were shutout 7-0. But the boys had better luck versus the Bears.

The Avalanche Opens on the Upswing at Brewster Ice Arena
On Sunday December 10, the Avalanche opened their hockey season at the Brewster Ice Arena versus the Rockland Rockies. With girls from John Jay, Mahopac, North Salem and Fox Lane, a downsizing of sorts has taken place since last year, which doesn’t sound like a good sign for the sport in our area. But in fact, the opposite is true.

Somers Falls Short in Comeback versus John Jay
After ending their break with a victory over Eastchester last week, Somers was hoping to follow up with a win over John Jay. The home game on Wednesday January 3, the Tuskers fell behind 21-9 and looked defeated before intermission. But the girls battled back and a three point deficit with two minutes remaining in the game had a comeback in clear view.

John Jay Holds on in 49-42 Win Over Somers
Back from break, John Jay traveled to Somers on Wednesday January 3 and didn’t come out with any rust. The Wolves built a 21-9 second quarter lead and looked well on their way. But the Tuskers put some squeak to their wheels, and when Arianna Adelmann sunk a triple, the three point fourth quarter difference suddenly had the game in doubt.

John Jay Defeats Hen Hud 42-28
Click below last year's photos On Tuesday, December 19, John Jay traveled to Hen Hud and fell behind 28-18. So the next two matches were crucial, and after Austin Omin got his team a six spot, Jake Llanos must have felt the weight of his turn for the entire team. “No, I just focused on my match,” said the 170 pounder, and the results can’t be argued with.

Football For a Buck Tracks the Rise and Fall of the USFL
When the USFL hit the scene, the idea of spring football was pretty intriguing. The new league then signed Herschel Walker and notice was demanded. I probably tuned in and likely didn’t last more than a few plays. The same goes for the first USFL Championship game in 1983. More high profile signings following and the piqued interest ebbed again. None of these people were Giants, so the league was more a nuisance to me, and the move to fall sounded absolutely ridiculous. The three dollar settlement amused in the extreme, and the silliness was appropriately relegated to the dustheap. But when I heard Jeff Pearlman was writing a book, that also sounded intriguing, and I’m glad I gave it more than a passing glance.

Somers Boys Can’t Keep up with Mamaroneck in 72-43 Loss
On Wednesday December 27, Somers traveled down county for the Pelham High School Winter Tournament and faced Mamaroneck in the first game. Growing them big down county, the Tigers had height inside, and at the same time, used the advantage to make plenty of space outside. The combination proved too much, and the Mamaroneck Tigers didn’t waste much time to exert dominance.
