Tarrytown Painter Takes the Long Road on Her Artistic Journey
Clara Shen was sitting in her Tarrytown Studio a few years ago, and had the impetus to go for a ride. Instead, the Chinese immigrant began splattering a colorful sports car road trip alongside the ocean. At the same time, the death of friend's dog provided further inspiration, so a four legged creature signals a joyful yelp at shotgun. But despite a multilevel kaleidoscope call across species—which screams for a buyer—Shen still sees deficiencies, and the pull of perfectionism.

Harrison High School Athletes to Remember
Harrison Goalie Thrives on the Action Harrison Goalie Jackie Fonseca knows that even when the play is breaking away from her end of the soccer field, she has to be on her toes. “At any given moment, anything can happen,” she said. But the randomness obviously increases as the action bears down on her. That has her being open to the added intensity and plays a big part in closing down attacker after attacker.

5th Grade Somers Girls Win the Tri-County Basketball League Championship at the Buzzer
The 5U Girls TCBL Championship game at 7 Bridges School on Sunday didn’t look like it would amount to much excitement at the outset. Ardsley’s deft little point guard put the ball on the floor, and set her sights for the rim en route to eight first quarter points. The long two her oversized shooting guard drained from the corner didn’t say much for a compelling game either. So, facing a 10-4 deficit after one, Somers looked as the tandem was going to run them out of the gym. But the closure that coach Rob Hawkins got his girls to employ said nothing about giving up, and ultimately had the Tuskers and Lindsay Ulaj sounding their trumpets in a 24-22 buzzer beater.

Part II: With Few Words, Scenes that Say Plenty
Second Installment of Scenes with Few Words 'Star Trek : The Motion Picture'… Enterprise Flyby My friends we’ve come home. Ten years in the wilderness, Robert Wise knew we needed and deserved more than a passing glance of the Enterprise. The silence running for a full four minutes and 48 seconds, there was no way that dry dock was going to allow us to embark without our eyes turning into a watery mess. Characteristically, Jim Kirk gave us the strength as the ole NCC emerges in the distance over his proud and wondrous glare.

250,000 Annual Deaths from Medical Mistakes, Dr. Richard Klein of Yorktown Urges Us to Survive Our Doctors
250,000 people die annually because of medical mistakes. The statistic doesn’t sit so seamlessly with the claim that we have the world’s best healthcare. Dr. Richard Klein of Yorktown long ago noted the discrepancy, and has not sat idly in the face of the system’s inadequacies.

'Philomena' Shows the Way for a Catholic Church that has Long Lost its Way
Philomena is yet another instance of the vast, unimaginable crimes of the Catholic Church. Young girls would get pregnant, and the Church sold the babies to wealthy American families. Of course, if complications arose, the wayward girls were spared the embarrassment and died anonymously among makeshift midwives. Based on the research and novel by Martin Sixsmith, the 2013 film does still provide a course for salvation. But if things are ever going to change, Philomena has the playbook, and her insistence on sharing it, makes this Stephen Frears film standout.

Cary Grant and Tommy Chong: Two Very Different Stars Who Didn’t Shrink in the Face of the Establishment
Cary Grant had no problem with the ambiguity that surrounded his sexuality, according to his daughter, Jennifer Grant. It simply made women want to prove the rumors wrong. That’s her story and I’m sticking with it.
