2021 Reading List
Every year, starting in 2020, I have compiled a list of the books that got me through the year. Typically, and this year was no exception, I read books for religious study, fiction, even books I’ve read before. Books from all over the place, from recommendations or a book that screams at me from the shelf at a book store. 2021 was a great year for reading.

The Sky is Cyan
Back maybe about 20 years ago I was at a weekly Houston area gathering called Metro. Typically there would be a speaker, think early Ted Talks, and some live music. The guest musician that night was a man who I would enjoy many cups of coffee with over the next few years named Seth Woods. As he approached the stage with only an acoustic guitar, a friend leaned over and told me he looked like me in 30 years. We had the same crazy hair and scruffy beards. As luck would have it, I was able to get to know Seth over the next few years. It turned out that we had some mutual friends. When I told Seth this a while later, we realized we were within only a few months of each other! We both had a good laugh about it, but I have to admit that Seth got the short end of that joke.

What You Write With
For a lot of writers, writing is as much about their level of comfort as it is the actual writing process. Some writers can tell you, at length, about the process. The process is as much about the writing as it is about the writing tool. I have known writers who are so temperamental about their writing implements, that they have them organized better than their filing cabinets. Hence the picture above.

The Way We See Things
As human beings we are naturally thoughtful. Experiences make us who we are. We get images of people in our mind and that’s how we remember them. Sometimes it creeps up on us that the person who we remember isn’t the person who is standing in front of us. It makes me think of the scene in A Christmas Story where Ralphie gets the pink bunny outfit for Christmas. Even if Ralphie was a girl he’s not a little kid anymore.

Lost Through Generations
When it comes to ranch or farmland, pastures are something that take a lot of time to maintain to ensure that crops and livestock can enjoy the fields. The same thing goes for stories and history. Every family has stories that are told and passed down through generations. But the thing is, we have to keep telling the stories to keep them alive. Eventually, the stories just fade into the people who lived them, and if we're lucky, we'll at least remember the people in the stories.

2020 Reading List
I read a lot. I wouldn't say I'm a prolific reader, but I do my share. When I'm not reading blogs or online articles, nothing beats the old familiarity of a book. A book is something tangible to hold and get close to you. I can get to know the characters and picture them in my mind. I think that's what has always intrigued me about reading. Over the last 12 months, I have kept a chronicle of the books I have read through, both fiction and nonfiction.

Unconventional Writing Books
Every writer is constantly looking for ways to improve, even the greats. Creatives, writers, are their own worst critics, so new technologies are always tempting. Sometimes, the best new techniques and tips come from unexpected places. Sometimes, the best advice comes when and where you least expect it, if you're willing to listen.

Finding Your Voice as a Writer
In writing, we talk a lot about finding your voice. Finding your voice has a lot to do with figuring out what you want to write about, which depends solely on figuring out what kind of writer you want to be. The way I see it, there are three types of writers. The Cynic. The Romantic. The Seeker. While writing is a journey, I think almost, almost all writers fall into one category. But, writers can change categories as they grow.

Tips for a Better Writer
I studied Creative Writing in college. I’ve been writing since then, but only recently began to take it seriously. Of course, the ultimate goal is to make money writing, but that’s not what this article is about. These tips are things that I have been practicing in my writing journey.
