12 Houses Top Story - January 2021
There's a corner in my home that has been a bedrock of my childhood but strangely has lived in many different houses. This “corner” has traveled with me over the years and transforms any new unfamiliar house into a home. My family and I moved around a lot when I was growing up, 12 times to be exact, but my thoughtful parents were always able to provide me with this cozy corner and avenue of creativity and escape.

You Are Not a Time Bomb
Dear Natalie, You are not a time bomb. Before you set your ambitious and comendable goals, I want to remind you of this: you are not going to detonate at the end of this year if you do not accomplish all of the goals, projects and things you think you should accomplish in order to be "successful." Success is not always what it seems.

Have you ever receieved a gift with strings attached? Or maybe someone gave you a DIY gift, consisting of actual string and glue? Even though it's "made from the heart," it's falling apart. We all give gifts in different ways and have different giving personalities. I have encountered these seven different types of givers. Let me know which one you are or have come across! (Listed below are the humorous and negative ones. I did not include the thoughtful and loving gift-givers which of course, do exist).

Hank the Hound Detective
On the top floor of an apartment building lived an old, wrinkly, brown, Basset Hound named Hank. He was the pet of the famous detective Billy Bass. To the humans, the name “Billy Bass” meant something, but in the pet world, it meant nothing. If you asked the parrot in the apartment next door, or the fish in the apartment below, they wouldn’t know who you were talking about. But if you mentioned the name Hank to them, well now, that’s a different story. The parrot would repeat the name and the fish would splash in his tank. “Hank” brought either admiration or fear, depending on to whom you were talking. Hank wasn’t just any dog, he was the famous pet detective.

Why Your Halloween Costume is Like Your Dating Profile
Halloween: The one day of the year we can dress as crazy, funny, or as slutty as we want and it’s actually acceptable (for the most part). But what most of us don’t realize is that every detail (or lack of detail) that we put into our costume, communicates something about our personality and dare I say, dating eligibility.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling CookiesFirst Place in Trick or Treats Challenge
It’s that time of year when the air gets a little cooler, the days become shorter, and suddenly magic swirls in the air, the feeling that anything can happen. Oversized sweaters and warm coffee in hand become my fashion statements and every year, around this same time, a text is sent to my sister text thread.

When Monsters Hide
Shield your eyes. But if you must look, if you are too curious, I cannot stop you. Here lies the scariest image you will ever come across. What you don’t realize is that you have seen it every halloween, for the past seven or so years, but your eyes have deceived you. You have fallen prey to it’s trap and illusion. What is it? Is it an alien creeping the Midwestern woods, here on earth to take over a town? Is it the ghost of an ancient mansion, finally captured on film? Is it a demon released from hell? Is it a witch flying through the forest?

Two Headlights
Two headlights flashed on a secluded peak of the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. These rolling hills were the backyard and playground of the rich and famous whose houses were hidden in the blanket of hills. But tonight, mysterious lights signaled a solo walker being guided by a blue flashlight. A few moments later, the lights flashed again. One, two, gone. They disappeared into the black abyss, as if they had never been up there. But I knew they were there. The coyotes in the field below yelped their nightly tune, unaware of the goings on above them. The walker continued.
