Strangers' Fruit
Two tired men approached a diminutive woman who doddered along displaying a gentle smile. The smile was strong enough to push back her large cheeks and close her eyes. As she walked, she hummed a strangely familiar melody. Her feet moved across barren ground softened by a pile of ashes and adorned by a half-eaten apple. A thin brown worm moved in and out of the apple. She spoke softly. Her voice, rich with sadness was much different than her face conveyed. As she approached the silhouettes of the two tired men, the vibrations of her words seem to come from behind her and pass through their tall, male bodies.

A strong presence of moonlight was always better than any of the heavy blankets her grandmother made or any of her grandfather’s enchanting bedtime stories. Yet she couldn’t sleep. Her mind would not let her. Tomorrow evening would be the day all the residents of Blue Mist, Montana would ice fish together.

1969 When she looked in the mirror she could barely recognize her own face. Her eyes were so white they cast a bluish tint. They appeared larger and rounder than she remembered. Rosalyn, now known as Sister Ayodele, had not seen a reflection of herself in over six weeks. Her dark brown skin, once marred by acne, now appeared smooth and translucent, casting off a subtle copper glow. Her cheekbones were more pronounced accentuating her wide jawline. Her expression was flat and pensive, her brow and lips relaxed and unmoving.
