A Laptop of Lies
As long as I could remember, it was my mom and me against the world. All her other family was either dead or estranged, and I never knew my dad. She didn’t like talking about him. Whenever I asked, she’d get this uncomfortable look in her eyes. She said she didn’t know the guy; it was a one night stand. The only other thing she’d tell me was that I had his eyes. Then she’d quickly change the subject by distracting me with a snack or a fun activity. Eventually I stopped asking about my dad, but that didn’t stop me from imagining who he might be. Each version was more awful than the last… drunk, thief, murderer. Whoever he was, he had to have done something horrible if Mom couldn’t bear to talk about him. Little did I know, the truth was stranger than fiction.

The Voiceless: part 1
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. She awoke with no idea how she got here and only fragmented memories of her prior life, but she didn’t have to remember the outside world to know she wanted no part of it. A small sliver of sunlight shone through the window, illuminating one corner of the room where she lay. She rolled onto her side in the stuff metal cot, turning away from the light. The light was bad… She didn’t know how or why; she just knew.

Crazy Cat's Christmas Surprise
Crazy Cat loved Christmas! He loved helping Mr. Humann decorate the Christmas tree by playing with all the lights and ornaments. He loved helping Mrs. Humann bake cookies by walking all over the kitchen counter. He loved helping Harry write his letter to Santa Claus by swatting the pen out of his hand. Most of all, he loved Christmas presents!

Sappy Movies and Sad Memories
When I hear the phrase “holiday hijinks”, I think of classic Christmas movies in which the holiday turns out alright despite whatever setbacks may happen. The Grinch steals all the Whos’ stuff but ultimately learns the true meaning of Christmas. Rudolph finally earns the approval of the society that shunned him when he helps Santa Claus deliver the presents on Christmas Eve. Ralphie Parker is rewarded for the various shenanigans he endured throughout the holiday season with the BB gun he wanted. Even in my all-time least favorite holiday movie The Christmas Shoes, two of the main characters lose a mother during the Christmas season, but one is able to help the other.

Crazy Cat's Fishy Friend
Crazy Cat sat in his favorite spot on the windowsill, watching the world outside. He saw birds, bugs, cars, and people pass by, but there was no sign of his family. Where were they? Mr. and Mrs. Humann should be coming home from work, and their son, Harry, should be coming home from school soon! Finally, Crazy Cat saw the family’s yellow car pull into the driveway. Put-put-put!

The Good Dragon
The ruins of the burning village below glowed brilliant orange, lighting up the night sky. The blinding flames and acrid smoke had no effect on me. Like all dragons, I had been around fire since I could remember, and dragon or not, fire was nothing new in these parts. As long as the Dragon Wars waged, something was always burning, though no one knew if the fire was caused by humans or dragons. Neither side even knew what they were fighting for anymore; all they knew was that humans and dragons were mortal enemies.
