To Toronto Comicon, My X-Men Fandom
With the announcement of a new season of the beloved “X-Men” animated show, there’s been an outpouring of interest and enthusiasm for the franchise from fans and newcomers alike. That love was palpable at Toronto Comicon, with X-Men art, t-shirts, cosplays, and the “X-Men” show’s voice actors and producer/director all in attendance.

“X-Men ‘97”: No-Spoiler Review of Episode 1
“X-Men ‘97” made its Canadian premiere at Toronto Comicon—fittingly on a Saturday morning, which is a throwback to when the original show was a Saturday Morning cartoon that people would tune in for. The premiere was screened in the Xavier’s Lounge for Gifted Youngsters—two conference rooms transformed into a giant North American living room, complete with bean bags, mismatched sofas, posters stuck on walls, and display cabinets. It was adorable.

Review – “What If…?” Season 2
Fans of Marvel comics have loved the “What If…?” tales that explored alternate possibilities for their characters. I am definitely one of those fans, and I was delighted when Marvel Studios announced they would release an animated television show based on the same concept for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Review – “Dashing Through the Snow” Doesn’t Capture the Christmas Magic That the Story Is About
Watching a Christmas film in the middle of November is a bizarre experience. But then again, in 2023, it seems like Christmas celebrations started the moment Halloween was over. I know we joke about it every year, but I really feel it this time. So, it should have come as no surprise to me that Disney+ would release a holiday film when we’re still far away from the Christmas break.

Review – “The Marvels” Excels When It Embraces Being a Comedy of Errors
The doom and gloom about the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been constant ever since the Infinity Saga ended in 2019. And there’s been an uptick of concern as rumours about behind-the-scenes trouble and release date issues surrounding “The Marvels” came to light. But, it’s not like Captain Marvel’s first outing was without issues—little of which had to do with the film. So “The Marvels” was certainly fighting against the odds as it made its much-delayed release.

Review – Black Cake Tells an Unconventional Story, But Suffers from Too Many Tropes
“Black Cake” opens with a young woman (Mia Isaac) running for her life in a wedding dress. It’s dark, and people are calling for her, but nothing stops her from racing away. That is, until, she reaches the shore—where will she go now?

Review – Loki Season 2 is Riveting Sci-Fi
The latest phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not won over many fans. I wrote about why “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was such a thorough disappointment. I refuse to even think about the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” film, and couldn’t even bother to watch another season of “I Am Groot”; and I’m an MCU fan. I can’t say all this bodes well for “Loki” Season 2.

TIFF 2023 Reviews – Short Films Round-Up
Short films can be some of the most insightful and evocative forms of cinema, and yet they’re often the hardest to come by. I was sent a few screeners of short films that were screening at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. They were a spectacular collection of stories, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to watch them.

Fan Expo Canada 2023 Recap
Toronto fans’ annual summer pilgrimage to all things fandom was a crowded, star-studded affair. There were more installations than in previous years—heralding the supposed return to normal. It wasn’t a normal expo though; some of us are still masked and uncomfortable with packed crowds. The expo also took place while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were going on, so the majority of the stars refrained from talking about struck productions.

Film Review - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
The fifth, and possibly final, instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise has arrived, and would you believe it, the film is tremendous fun! After the film premiered, randomly, at the Festival de Cannes, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ was inundated with poor reviews from those who saw it. Could the franchise have sunk to a new nadir following the much-reviled ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’? Anything’s possible.

Holy Robins, Batman! Ranking the Live-Action Boy Wonders So Far [Updated]
Dick Grayson - aka Robin - has been around for almost as long as his mentor Batman, but is often ignored in live-action adaptations. Admittedly, the Caped Crusader is the more charismatic figure and the Boy Wonder has usually been cast as the sillier, campier inclusion to attract younger audiences, but Grayson, in his guise as Robin and later as Nightwing, has always had his fans.

Review - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Sequels are hard, especially when you’re following up a film that blew people’s minds with its animation and storytelling, and walked off with an Academy Award. But 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' is able to pull it off. Mostly. The film is bigger, better, and yet more personal—somehow directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham make this expansive world that much more interesting while upping the stakes and introducing elements to the canon that will leave you desperate for more. If there’s a universe where the 'Spider-Verse' films go on forever, I want it to be this one.
