Shades of You
You are various shades of blue, in the way that you wish to bring peace to those around you. In the way you look to soothe the hurt and pain of the ones you love. Even though there is still healing that you need to do. In the way that the more fragile pieces of you come undone when you are alone, and you create a sense of order in the chaos. A sense of order that can be lost leaving you feeling out of control.

If walls could talk the voices of the walls built up around her heart would have so much to say. They mark boundaries and expectations and have been reinforced throughout the years by many failed attempts at love. They creak and sway with every attempt to break them down, but it always ends the same.

Butterflies In The Sky
The fire sparked in her eyes as the words slipped from my mouth. "But, I don't want to do that." I tried to be quick in my escape but her reflexes were much quicker than mine. She gripped the back of my shirt and jerked so hard it knocked the wind out of me. The collar dug into my throat and started to burn.

The Lady in Pants
I tapped my steering wheel to the beat of the music as my head bobbed along. My destination was only five minutes away and the interview was scheduled for twenty minutes after arrival. The call was completely unexpected, but it got my heart pumping with excitement. I spent the entire evening prior picking what to wear, prepping my hair, practicing answers to potential questions, and gathering important paperwork I hoped would help me stand out against other candidates. As I looked over the outfit laid in front of me, I made a last-minute choice to wear dress pants instead of a pencil skirt.

The sun beat through the window. The rest of my red popsicle dripped onto my knee-length jean shorts and my feet rested on the dashboard. Every so often I would duck my head below the passenger side window in hopes my siblings wouldn't notice me in the car. A Letter At a Funeral
I watched as people filed into the room. Their black attire absorbed any light that was trying to thrive in the space. There were flowers placed throughout the room trying to bring life to an event about death. People walked by pictures that held lively memories, they wept, they laughed, and so many either squeezed my hand or hugged me. I heard the same statements over and over. I'm sorry for your loss. My condolences. She was an amazing human. You're so strong. I felt weak. My knees felt wobbly and I felt like a broken recording, thank you. I watched them all stop at the small emerald green box at the front of the room. It was surrounded by more pictures and larger flower arrangements.

Happy Little Things
The envelopes weighed my hands down as I sorted through them. My eyes burned from staring at the computer screen as I flicked from page to page. Occasionally I’d stop sorting the envelopes after tearing them open and start crunching numbers on a calculator. I sighed, unsure if I could stretch my paycheck any further.

If I Had A Dream...
If only we could be taught love and inclusivity as easily as we are taught hate and exclusion. If only we could remain as open-minded as our children who have yet to understand the cruelty of the real world. If only there would be no cruelty left in the world. We would remain in some forms pure. No longer would we find conflict in those that are different from us, we could embrace the things that make us different because at the end of the day we all bleed the same.

The Pack
In this family, a dog is more than a man's best friend. He is a member of the family, a brother, an uncle, a child. Each and everyone is cared for as such. So, in this case, what does an unleashed life look like? Well, it’s a lot of naps on couches, snuggles in bed, getting to lick the plates clean at dinner time, and an open yard to roam freely in. Our family has a soft spot for all animals, especially dogs, and it’s hard to pick a favorite memory when they are part of so many. We might as well own a family nonprofit pet sanctuary. The estate seemed much larger than I remembered it. The emptiness of the fields made it appear to stretch for miles. Many years had gone by since I had stepped foot on the property. The house, which had held so much life, was still in the quiet of the early morning. At the garden's edge stood the grand barn. It appeared beaten and hauntingly empty. In the middle of the night, it sounded like it was calling out to me, beckoning me to once again open the doors and fill its insides with life. That was my father's job though, to keep the farm alive, the garden-fresh, and the barn full. I only returned after his recent passing to tend to some of his affairs. I had no interest in continuing his legacy at the farm, and I never did.
