Bio
I love writing and I think it shows in my posts. I also enjoy feedback, particularly of the constructive kind. Some people think I am past my "best before date" but if that is true, it just means I have matured.

In Your Dreams
Sleeping and dreaming are as necessary to the human body as food and water. One of the many problems we suffer in our modern society is sleep deprivation. Up until the invention of the electric light bulb in 1882, this was much less of a problem. Most people woke at dawn and went to sleep when it was dark. By 1925, most homes in the USA and Canada were electrified. Today, we have a multitude of issues that prevent city dwellers, and to a lesser degree people in small towns, from getting a good night’s sleep. The two main ones are light pollution and noise pollution.

The Tree Graveyard
Recently, my wife and I drove from Vancouver up into the Kootney area of British Columbia, Canada to visit our daughter. She lives in a small town in the Columbia Valley which is itself in the Kootenays, in the foothills of the incredible Rocky Mountains. The weather the previous few months had been wet and mild and as a result, the countryside was lush and green, the meadows carpeted with beautiful displays of wildflowers of every color and shade.

To My Mother
Dear mother: You were 30 years of age when you gave birth to me. The date was September 30th, 1943. D-Day was eight months away and the end of World War II was still two years away. I was your third child, the first of two boys and was also the middle child, though no one knew that at the time.

Planet Earth is the best place in the universe to live – so far. Unlike mythical gods of both today and of past ages, the earth is not mean-spirited, capricious, or spiteful. It just is. The fact that earth sustains us with a perfect atmosphere; oceans that support an incredible variety of life, a biosphere that does the same for birds and land animals and us humans along with a moon that provides us with the wonder of tidal seas is remarkable. And, all the more so when you consider the following:

A Pandemic and an Apple
Little to nothing was known of germs and bacteria prior to the 17th century. The Bubonic Plague or as it was more commonly named, the Black Death, was a major pandemic that raged through the known world in the Middle Ages from time to time with the people having no knowledge of its origins. Superstition was rife in these times and infection was attributed to a number of things including bad air, evil spirits, poisoned wells, foreigners and sin amongst other things. Populations affected by the plague had little reason to suspect it was transmitted from rats and mice to humans by the bites of fleas. It was incredibly virulent and is now known to have been caused by the fleas being infected with the bacterium Yersinia Pestis.
